Hot Coat

Do you add catalyst AND surfacing agent to the resin when making a hot coat? Or does the surfacing agent act as a catalyst? Also, should I glass the fins on during the hot coat or wait until the glassing is done? One more thing. What’s the easiest way to install a leash plug? I don’t have a drill. You guessed it, first time shaper. I shaped this sweet 6’9 and then pretty much ruined it by trying to glass it myself. Hopefully I can fill all the bumps and dips with the hot coat and then just sand it until it resembles a surfboard again. Have to say it was a lot of fun trying all of this but I might stick to buying my next board.

you got it. you add wax solution to the laminating resin and then catalyz it off to make it hard. glass on the fins after laminating it and then hotcoat it.

truly inspired …the greatest board in the history of mankind persevere lad something you did by mistake will inspire and enlighten a dark corner of human conciousness …some kid will catch his first wave on that board the next one will be better… buying a few in between will enlighten you … I put em on the hot coat after sanding the fin area …you decide everybody develops a prefrence … I like to think It’s not as likely to pull up the glass when the fins fail…sooner or later it can make the repair less devastating. ambrose … go kid go

If you don’t have a drill, try to borrow one to install the leash plug. Use a sharp Forstner Bit slightly larger than the plug. Drill into the hotcoat a tad deeper than the plug. Add white pigment to a small amount of resin, catalize and set it in. Sand later. If you really can’t get your hands on a drill, scratch a round pattern with a sharp awl or knife until you cut through the fabric, remove the round piece of cloth/resin, then cut and dig out the foam with whatever works.

Thanks guys I’m going to get started on it right now. Hopefully it will cure by the 1st when this new swell comes in.
