There is a hot knife at HF for $15 and I was wondering if any have used this (or similar) tool for outline cuts. Good idea? Any special info or technique?
No, you need a thin wire. A hot knife will melt too much foam. The foam will fuse behind the cut and make an even bigger mess.
Make a harp out of ply wood, get some wire, and plug it into the wall.
If you are looking to cut out a template just cut it with a saw?...Hand saw, Jigsaw? or you can use a router with a wood zing bit.
Even if the router does not cut all the way through, just make sure you cut from the bottom up. Just snap the uncut foam away...you going to turn the rails anyway?
Clean the whole mess up with the planer. I mean put the cut blank saddle up in the stand, then run the planner over the rough cut at a zero cut. It will clean it up real quick.
Now go.
Good insights coming from the head.
Using the handsaw now. Looking for a better way. From the info provided, I will change my plan.
Thanks for saving me $15 and untold aggravation recovering from yet another self-induced disaster.
