Ok we all know, do a hot mix when fitting fins plugs and they will lift, But last week i fitted two set of my new fin system and the mix when off before i got the last plug filled, Sh-t but the plugs did not lift at all. the mix was, Lam resin, Gel coat for some colour and some Talc powder for some body. some one here may have the answer. the fitting kit was only taped down Thanks for your help Peter (Rabbit) http://www.southcoastfoam.com.au

I advise people to mix your batches so they kick in 15 mins, hot but not to hot. Aloha Kokua

Aloha Kokua I dont use these plugs but I fixed a few using 3m marine white silicone caulk.sticks like hell.no shrinkage…waterproof and was thick enough to set the angle without any jigs.I was able to grind the plug down in 30 minutes although the total cure is around 24 hours.

Did the top lam discolor or show any signs of expansion? I’ve seen this happen. Actually kind of melted a plug. The guy who set them removed the templates shortly after the resin gelled (left the set screws loose). I suspect that he diddn’t wipe them down with acetone before installation. I think it was a combination of too hot a mix, not clean enough plugs, and templates removed too soon. Also, I dont know if he added anything added to the resin to fortify it(ie: milled fiber or that sort of thing). Isn’t it true that catalised resin goes off faster in a confined area like a mixing bucket ? That much faster and hotter in a real confined area like a fin plug hole or a squirt bottle. I installed a set today with the resin catalised at half of one percent (five drops per ounce) It gelled right after I finished pouring it in but didn’t discolor or get to hot. Air temp over 80 degrees. I like these type of fins and I am looking forward to trying your product. Later Bro.

Rick I have found when you wash the plugs in Acetone the resin willnot adhere to the plugs, after a couple of days drying you can feel a edge between the plug and resin,I now only sand the plugs, Next time i fit some will try dipping in Lam first, Let it go hard then fit the plugs. I can only see the crack when i use white plugs. When we did some testing on fitting heaps of plugs the gases would bend and melt the bootom of the plug, Thats why i was surprised when i used a hot mix of Gel coat and Talc nothing happened to the plugs or Resin. So there must be something in this mixture. We now have a name for the fin system Fin solution one Cost is about $15.00 USA plus Postage by Airmail http://www.southcoastfoam.com.au
