Hot water, Surfer's suspension

The problem now is his draw, who happens to be ks, moves to the next round. This technically may not be fair to all competitors equally. Thankfully Kelly didn’t make the decision.

Also, they asked his opinion… uh…

Care to comment?

You’re either not watching or you don’t surf much since you wouldn’t paddle out in such crap.  Go watch the heats on demand.  http://www.quiksilverpro.com/videos.en.html  The great thing about a contest like this is it shows who can surf in all sorts of conditions.  This event has had better conditions on average than many big name California contests over the years.

I don't really follow the circus, i mean tour, but honestly, for f*cks sake, to go from tahiti, to that is a bit of a wank. I can understand the frustration, that event is obviously to boost clothes sales, and let the fat cats earn some more money ( how many people live in new york?? ). I liked how he compared it to a tennis event, classic, and hit the nail on the head. At least he spoke his mind, give him credit for that.

Yes, he did do that hahaha.

I don't follow the pro aspects of surfing much either, so I don't know what he's referring to, but lets face it, guys who compete at that level are gonna be passionate about the sport, you gotta expect stuff like this to come out when they're frustrated (Nixon was president of the U.S., and he used worse language, or at least as bad, LOL).

He's worked hard to be where he is, I think they should let him surf his heat.

What if surfing was just for people to go to the beach and have fun riding waves?

story behind it is that they changed the structure / qualifying for the tour last year. bobby doesn't like it so he hasn't showed to last 2 events and has been constantly whinging about it. reckons he's only surfing in NY for his new gangster brand sponsors.

I reckon he's completely out of line. guy gets paid to surf for a living and still has stuff to gripe about. get a grip.

if I went on live TV and bad mouthed my employer like that, i'm sure i'd be out of a job too.

cya bobby, dont let the door hit you on the way out.

I didn't realize he was an employee, shows what I know about the constest scene LOL.

That fiddle plays both ways. Obviously someone benefited from him being able to surf good and usually, in the end, it’s not the surfer…but the sponsors and ASP.  Just like the free stadiums put up in towns whose money helps no one but the big franchise owners to satisfy people’s cravings for super stars.

Who but people caught up on all the B.S. care whether the event is a success? There is an entire surfing world out there who can appreciate the surfing of these people without giving a tinkers damn about whether they make it in the ASP.

Got my hackle up on this one...Smug little boy...Foolish kid.

Guys get $700K - 1MM+ contracts to play with pool toys in the ocean. They travel around on the company's dime to surf in locations we only dream of.  Poor little pro surfers.

Just suck it up like a man and keep your opinions to yourself. Just surf.

Your not KS and you never will be KS...No one for a long time will be like Slater.  He is special.   Cold hard fact, KS is a franchise.  Martinez is not. Martinez is unique, but not in a good way unique now.  I'd say hes fitting into his stereo type quite nicely now.  That's too bad for his sake.

The pro surf world & and it's cash revolves around Slater.  Slater can golf, play tennis, play hockey, curling, cricket..or tiddly winks.  And he's going to beat you at everyone of them, because he is a stone cold killer. Sorry Aussies.

I guess Bobby could go back to his other gig he was doing pre pro surfing.....err.

Heres some advise to all the wanna be pros, or anyone not ranked #1 in the world:

Hey pro surfers out there. Enjoy it while you can and make the most of it.  Hopefully you have saved a few million in your checking account?  If not you can maybe you can become a clothing sales rep, a surf team manager, or run a surf school....If your lucky.  If not maybe you can get a trade job swinging a hammer, or plastering walls in the hot sun.

The life style you have grown a custom too will come to a screaching halt when you have to pay for hotel rooms, meals, airplane tickets etc.  Surf trips, cars, houses..and chicks are not cheap the way you have been living.

Enjoy the ride boy's.  It's all down hill from here.

One word David Eggers.....look it up if you don't know

It is good to hear both sides. Thanks to sways we can.

Tennis anyone? http://youtu.be/p8KZMZ2AqV4

Circus? Reminds me of a sea of Chaplin(s) in the sea. Charlie with a horse.

Resinhead,

Nicely said sir, nicely said. That primadonna BS has gone through every sport. They do live SUCH a hard life…

Well, he knew he was gonna be in hot water as he was saying it "...and the ASP is gonna fine me"...it sounded like he had been waiting for a chance to vent..the funny part of the video is the interviewer's face as Bobby is going off.  Than he wraps it up with, "Bobby Martinez, not holding nothing back right there." hahaha

dlock that video looks like possibly the worst surfing experience of anyone’s life!

as for martinez, who cares, he will become another noname surfer who outlived his passion.

I dunno, he looked to me like a spoiled brat kid that was trying to make the older kids laugh by mouthing off.

If that’s his opinion, fine, but, the way he said it all was very childish.

And, I agree with everything Resinhead said.

well said chrisp.

if he didn't like the system he had enough time a long time ago to air his opinions and opose the changes.

It seems like when he wasn't doing so good, he couldn;t be bothered doing any QS events to get the points up so he's quit and bad mouthed the system for his failures.

He's been increasingly whiny the last couple of year "the judges dont score me well because i'm a bad boy" type stuff. it's pathetic.

Imagine if an NFL player, NBA player, or in Australia and NRL or AFL player went out and had an outburst against their respective leagues like that - they would probably cop a huge fine or suspension too.

Agree.  The  ASP, along with the sponsors, ESA, WSA, NSSA and all the rest have been getting away with their hypocrisy for too long. Turn a blind eye to drug abuse and some surfers on tour struggling with it because you want the rebel lifestyle so the kiddles will watch and spend their money and kick a guy who actually shows the attitude and directed it in your direction off.   ***K the ASP and all the rest of them. I’m glad he said and I’m glad he said exactly how he did.  Hopefully it will piss off the self righteous fish symbol crowd who are prevalent in surfing communities and suck of the industry with their special surf ministries also.

I don’t know him. I tend to gravitate away from any prima donna, but I agree with what he said. Some here who talk about Slater being a franchise…****K that too.  Who needs any of it. The ASP and all of the competative garbage and most of the folks footing the bills for the garbage are the ones who screwed the sport and are still like vampires sucking it dry and tossing the refuse from the actions of nefarious ways into the garbage when they are done.  Most of these pros, like most boxers end up used up and adults who should know better helping them do it.

I know you say you don't follow it so your ignorance of the event and issues Martinez is upset about can be excused.  The New York event has been a big success.  Nobody can complain about this event.  The conditions have been very good and the level of surfing has been off the charts.  Guess you didn't see Joel's tube ride this morning or any of the other incredible surfing that has been going on.

As contests go a contest like this one in New York shows a lot more of the skill level of these surfers than your average dream-tour event.  Any solid surfer can surf well when the waves are perfect.

As for Martinez, what a complete un-greatful idiot.  The guy would be chopping lettuce in the back of a restraunt or riding the back of a garbage truck at best if not for the ASP.

I agree with your sentiment too Solo.

Bobby could have been a lot more effective if he had chose a better way to voice.

He came across like a spoiled brat mouthing off. Who’s going to listen to that?

Too easy to write off.

http://youtu.be/pa8hjawJUEg

When I saw this thread, I thought, W.T.F ?

Then I looked at the interview.

I agree with solo, but I can’t believe  that Bobby would actually say what everyone else thinks so credit to him for that at least. All this aside, they all surf really well and chopes was unreal to watch, but they are spoilt are’nt they ?

But these marketing guy’s are just that, selling a product to the sheep.

dlock that video looks like possibly the worst surfing experience of anyone's life!

Charlie Chaplin lived just down the beach.

PCH during morning rush and the 110. I like the three surfers exchange at 2:01 min mark with the longboarder cruising through again or the guys getting clipped by the lip.
