hot wire EPS health concerns

Are there any significant health issues related to the fumes from hot wire EPS? We are looking to set up EPS blank production in NE Florida in the next few weeks. Shine

You want a big fan blowing on your wire anyway. The EPS is a good insulator, but the wire ends that stick out both sides get hot - when they start glowing, you’re done for - that’s where it breaks. A fan blowing across your work makes 'em last longer & blows the smell away. Its probably not something you’d want to deeply inhale…but I don’t know the physiology of it.

Sorry I didn’t answer your question, but hopefully this is helpful info as well. Good luck.

You’re not the Shine from Mill Valley, are ya?

No – from Virginia, now live in Jacksonville, Florida.

Thanks – fans will be in the program and a lot of extra wire on the sidelines.

EPS off-gasses bis-pentane (or pentane). Modern EPS emit less than even five years ago. EPS is relatively benign compared to other PU/PE gasses.

Heard a story about the Aussie blanks from a decade ago giving shapers headaches after mowing them. I hope they’ve improved too.

Getting electrocuted would be a concern. I setup my variac (also called an autotransformer) with an isolation transformer (30vac @ 8amp) after it, two fuses, and ran the ground wire to every possible location I could just to be safe. I also have a switch in my hand, on the cord to the hotwire bow, so I can shut it off.

Your power supply/variac setup turned out very nice! Your bow looks very Airframesk (is that a real word?)

Nice harp Glenn. Similar to our original one but with some real nice upgrades. Is it automatic or four on the floor?

Yes Greg I should have said that the insight for the bow would not have been if not for you and Ken. Thanks very much. Best of luck in these hard times!

from my personal research

its pretty safe, Not good in large doses for pregnant women

can make you dizzy

but if the wires not burning there is far less fumes anyway

so keep the temp right

as i understand it you were big production ,you would need good ventilation

and proly fume masks .but not really necessasry
