Hotocoat

Does it matter how much catalyst you put in your hotcoat resin as long as you get it down in time. What would happen if there is to much catalyst. How much resin would you use for a shortboard (6’0") and how much catalyst.

Thanks

I’m just a beginner, but for the two fish I’ve shaped (5’9" and 5’10"), I’ve mixed 1 quart for the top and 1 1/2 quarts for the bottom (extra for glass on fins)…This leaves me with plenty in case I screw up or miss some spots.

If you use to much catalyst you will make the hotcoat brittle

I found out the hard way when makin a board for a friend

I kicked it way too hot for the leashe loop and I’ll be cutting it off and redoin it :<

                                                                         Johnny...........

I think it can get so hot it smokes. Wouldn’t want to pour it on my board. I made a epoxy/styro skim board for my little girl. It gotso hot it melted through the plastic tub. Board survived. Expert opinion on the way I bet. mike

I’ve always liked to mix my resins for a 30 minute gell time, allowing me plenty of time, but for hot and gloss, allowing for complete brushing out, evening, and flow time to smooth over.

Anything quicker can be playing with fire, as we never get the batches just right.

Anything slower is just slow death for bugs, flies, and dust, sometimes separating, running, and really messin up.

Hey Spazman, I use Eastman resin and it has a different kick time than sylmar does. I use about 5 cc’s to a PINT for the bottom of a 6’0"…a little more for the deck. I use 8 cc’s to a quart for the lams and that will kick in 10 to 12 minutes. 5cc/pint will go off in about 5/7 minutes. I like for it to flow for about 3 to 5 minutes before it kicks. Long enough for the brushstrokes to be long gone but before the pin air has a chance to pop up …and all the wax runs off the side! I thin it with a little styrene if the lam is really smooth. If the lam was less than perfect I leave it a little thick for aggro sanding puposes. I’ve learned how to use the minimum amounts of resin so if you are still making your volume tables use more…better to have too much and waste some than not enough!

Howzit Spazman, for a 6’0’’ I use a pint of resin and kick it with 15cc’s of catalyst, seems just right to me, Aloha, Kokua
