Household styrene-type product?

I need to hotcoat a little section of board, about 2’x2’, but don’t have any sanding resin or styrene additive. Is there a household product I could use in a pinch that would allow this coat to be sanded?

As what you have to do is seal the area away from air for the time you need for it to harden completely…

try laying some wax paper over it, carefully. Overlap the edges a little ( as it’s gonna be too narrow to cover it completely in one shot) and lay it on very, very gently ( like applying gold leaf to sizing, if that makes any sense) , when the resin is just starting to gel, with no wrinkles or folds. It may leave some small edge marks, but you’ll be sanding it anyhow. The only other ways I know ( such as using a mold release agent ) are no easier to use or find than the styrene-based surfacing agent, so that may be the easiest thing that will work for you. I’ve used wax paper to keep resin from gluing my projects to whatever I’m supporting it on - long as it’s on there smooth it’s usually no problem.

There are some variations on plastic wrap that will do the same thing… but there are some others that are dissolved/melted in polyester resin too, and the only way to fnd out is to test 'em…better off with wax paper.

hope that’s of use, though I’d hold off a while and try to find some surfacing/sanding agent myself.

doc…

Mix some parafin wax in the resin(warm the wax up first). You can warm up the resin in a bucket of warmed water.Remember to strain you resin after mixing.

Mylar over lam resin will give you a glossy glass finish ,but sandable. The wax paper or cellophane trick works too.Herb

if you don´t got nothin of that, after “hot coat” put flour or talc…yeah it´s work…

This might sound funny, but just for playing around, do you think Bees Wax would work if I melted it and then mixed it with the resin and then strained it?
