Thanks Jeffrey, it's not guts, it's something I don't know, there was a time where this site sent me to depression. Now everything I write on here is the truth,[it was before too] maybe I was drinking more then, either way some good people here persuaded me to stay ,as we are doing with Surfding . I'm gonna make up my own nickname , it's ding, so Ding, get over it and stay, mate they let me. I know some of the heavy wieghts have barred me , because of my previous behaviour, , I'll live, and only 1 is a heavy weight to me , maybe 2, anyway, you got it now, H.
Michael (SD) has beared the brunt before. If I know him well enough, we can 'put the robe back over his shoulders and he wil return to the stage.
No harm no foul.

A lot of people fear what they do not understand.

If a “Jack of All Trades is a specialist at nothing” earns** LESS** respect than a “specialist” that can’t open his canned emergency food should the power go off… well, then Houston, we have a problem?
Wasn’t it the practical knowledge and jury rigged set up that got those boys back to Earth?
I can’t make it being ‘just’ a shaper anymore. So the story of the young guy glassing all those ‘precision shaped’ surfboards with bitchen logos and cute names can hurry up and flood the market to sit and collect dust and get mark down after mark down. I can’t blame the young guy for doing what he is doing so he can be around what he loves or pays his bills. Hopefully he does enough business that he can shape a few of his own in his spare time, and I hope even more that he shapes some that don’t look like everything else out there.
At the end of the day, I made my peace sometime ago, that I won’t be shaping 50 a week. I don’t have the market share, the trust fund to pay teamriders and run big ass ads beating my chest or placing psuedo testimonials (or even real ones) attesting why you want one of my boards over some other passionate guy or mega branding corporation.
So, just like in ‘the old days’ I pay piecework.
Except now, ALL the piecework goes to.
ME.
Less is more
In MY pocket.
So am I a "Jack of all trades, specializing at nothing?
Here’s nothing then… still having F-U-N.
(P.S. One tape uneven pin intentional.) Keep it funky Keep it simple Keep it fun.
Well, One to many beers for me.
…Hey SD, one thing I will say is I wish I “owned a machine”, It would fit nicely into my factory, But I don’t have the $.
I wish not to offend anyone.
Think I should shut up!
yep. Good Idea! ha ha.
See Ya. I’ll sit on the fence for a while I think.

Believe me I have bigger fish to fry and I am truly not as fortunate as you legends.
It’s time to disappear.
Have fun guy’s!
This is a waste of my time at this point and probably even more of yours…
why i mean if you sit at a computer all day it is the perfect place to come?
Huie thanks for the hand plane you made for my collection. You taught me a lot about Core. Thanks!
well what the fuck is that supposed to mean? i said i would do it you never followed it up
I wish all of you the very best for your board building careers and may you provide the very best for your families.
It was fun while it lasted!

Did anyone see “Jeopardy” this week?
If not, Google it and put “Watson IBM computer competes on Jeopardy”.
IBM spent a to of time creating Watson and has made siginificant progress in a computer’s ability to use deductive reasoning or probablility in a real life application onthe Jeopady set.
Watson beat the pants off former Jeopardy champions Ken Jennings & another big time winner.
The two day competition took 3 days of Jeopardy shows to complete, as they spent a lot of time highlighting Watson on the fast paced shows.
It was boring.
Ratings after the first day dropped to nil.
It was later discovered that Watson had an unfair advantage because the machine has a 1/100th second advantage on triggering the button to get first priority in answering.
Watson blew the first day final answer when asked to determine what U.S. airport was based on certain criteria and answered TORONTO.
We all make mistakes.
Sometimes I look at numbers that should be correct, and the shape DOESN’T LOOK RIGHT.
Sometimes I shaped two or three of the same blanks and one has “good wood for planing” and one not so good loaded with knots or poor grain.
Sometimes I IMROVE a shape in the glassing, hotcoating, sanding process.
Sometimes I notice one blank flexes differently with the same 1/8" basswood or 4 MM ply stringer even though they came out of the same mold.
Some times my taped laps aren’t exactly the same width tapeoff.
Sometimes the amount of resin I squeegee off varies from one board to another.
Often my freelaps are not identically freelapped.
Often the weather is not exactly the same when I am glassing one group from another or even one board from one later on in the day.
Often I block sand and area a bit more or a bit less to ‘true’ the final shape.
If the oil coming out of the ground that gets refined that goes into the making of the resin, foam, fiberglass I use making my boards, and if the wood grain, knots, maturity and curing of the stringers that are in my blank vary, then how ca I expect perfect perfect duplication of any board I build from one to another.
I live in a beautifully imperfect world, with all it’s different sunrises, sunsets, waves, and people.
If everyone I ever met was exactly the same, I’d be bored to tears.
Humor is often the vehicle of truth, eh? So many things can go wrong, that it's surprising it ever goes right.
Really interesting read here. Thanks for sharing everyone.
First post here and I’m loving swaylocks. Ive been reading as much as I can on this site to try and learn as much as I can.
Ive worked for a company here in New Zealand before repairing boards for him, he seemed to have the same how to make money and meet customer expectations concerns.
Im just getting back into it all and plan on starting to shape boards out of my garage here, and I really hope that after a few years I can get good enough and get enough people keen on my boards, to allow me to shape surfboards as a full time job.
I will be handshaping them all and finishing them all myself, and I think if I can somehow make a living from making boards then I would continue to do everything myself. And this thread really helped confirm for me that my ideas are on the right path.
I would like to say though if I couldn’t meet my customer demand hand shaping then I would get my models machined. After all the customer is always right and you need to make sure they are happy, but not to happy!!!
Cheers,
Carl aka Turtle
Also I wonder how board sales are now? Seems to me certain media outlets are really promoting hand shapers being artists these days.
Or is that just in the longboard retro style of boards little world?
Cheers
Turtle
Good to hear that Dead, Those Stoker Boards look great. Wish were closer it would be cool to take one for a test ride or two. Are you doing any in Epoxy or keeping them wrapped in ploy?
…hello Turtle, you can always supply the demand, always; its more difficult for a boardbuilder than a shaper, but with lot of work still possible.
For a shaper it s easier due to leave the shapes in the glass shop, so the crew almost do everything (also, if someone is a bad shaper but have top quality glass works, due to top notch glass shop, the board will look fantastic…) that is time consuming.
A custom shaper can do 1 shape per day, so around 30 per month; that working very little, around 3 hours a day (except some longboards or too complicated shapes)
so putting more time and this shaper can shape 2 or 3 per day, so between 60-90 shapes per month; all handshaped
I tell you that there s not so many shapers that have such amount of orders per month.
Then you have the production shapers (most), these ones can shape even more boards per day, due to not spend time talking with customers, tweaking ideas, checking the pre shapes and true in them, not so much time with complicated shapes or dims, close tolerance blanks, normally most shapes are the same type of “model”, etc. They can shape between 4-8 per day or more sometimes, so a lot per month; so if you have a brand and 3 ghost shapers, you can really have lots of shapes per month.
The machine is the biggest lie in this industry.
Im talking about the standard building not some different process like COIL have. that I do not talk, because I m not into that type of building.
hey dead now you mentioned it i cant seem to find that thread ?
cheers huie
I have some new stuff that I’ll be calling “AG”… for Anti Gravity. Probably won’t be sharing it on Sway’s though as they decided to send Choch’s thread out to pasture.
I got up at 4 A.M. to make a call to an interested dealer in Asia that ONLY sells premier American labels and saw an SVM in action last trip to Southern Cali… boards have been exploding on the East Coast and now headed to Europe and Taiwan.
I don’t blame the jealous assholes on Sway’s that kept PM’ing the mediators to bury my thread.
I’m just happy to stoke out continually growing numbers of customers that thank me daily.
The haters got what they want and I could give a shit.
I’m setting up camp elsewhere.
Much aloha to all the secret agenda asshole backstabbers on Swaylocks Surfboard Design Forum.
There are far more TAKERS than there are GIVERS.
Reminds me of a Vegass prostitute that tells you she loves you and wants to spend more time with you.
I’m done.
???

bruce this is the very reason i seem to have very little tolerance

i not have respect for you and thats another reason i dont give blood here.
** why do i come here? beacause the last time i looked it was still freedom of speach although it is fast being eroded’’ **

…that thread is alive and not bury on the surf shop forum. Explanation on page 41…
getting a stab in the back is the worst feeling of all.
Bruce, it’s a bummer all the house wives got
you down and it would be a shame for Sways if you decided to go being one of
the most knowledgeable shapers here and definitely the most articulated writer.
We’re not all C@&ts on hear though. F@&k all the cry babies, keep posting boards!!
