How do I get a good noserider longboard?

I am six foot and two hundred pounds, give or take a burrito, and was wondering how to go about getting the best noserider for my next longboard. Keep in mind that I love my longboards thick, wide, and heavy (volan glassing). Is a concave nose essential? Is a really wide nose essential? I am not concerned with turning, and am planning on putting in a Wingnut Big Daddy fin. Speaking of which, where should the fin box be from the tail? Thanks for the advice (in advance). Just for reference, I am currently riding a ten foot, 22.5 inch wide board. I don’t know the nose or tail dimensions. The board is 3.25 thick, and want it thicker, wider and more noseridable.

Ok if you want a better nose rider and many may say i’m full of shit but think about going wider and a little shorter 9’9 x 23 1/2 x 3 full nose with lots of hips and a round pin. Pins turn a little better when you start adding width. On bigger days the pin will be the Bomb!!! I like a bit of a blunt nose wider tip to dance on. Concave ??? it helps sure but when it’s offshore you’ll Hate it trust me… I surf a lot of strong offshores in the fall/winter here and tanks with big concave suck!!! Remember 3 string?? no plug… Rob

I surf 11’ boards. I have found that a good nose rider does not have to have a real wide nose. My best nose riders are 17 and 1/4 to 18 max. in the nose, and 23 to 24 wide. The tail is what helps you get to the nose and stay there. You need good kick in the tail, at pin seems to work just as good as a square tail, or even a rounded pin. I know Lance Carson makes a good nose rider, and he turns the blank around so he can get the kick in the tail that he wants. The best nose rider that I have even seen is the Bing nose rider it has a lot of concave and I mean a lot. I have never readen one so I can’t say too much about them, but I do know that they are not good for much other then nose riding. If there is size, or a fast wave you are going to eat it. I would go with no concave.

HEAVY GLASS AND LOWER NOSE ROCKER ARE TYPICAL OF GOOD NOSERIDERS. DON’T GET IT THICKER JUST WIDER.

THICK, WIDE, MORE TAIL ROCKER!!!

I’m 6’ & 200. the 2nd board I made myself (UGLY) is an 8’6", 18.5x 23.25x 14.5x 3 with a 5" square tail (good hips), concave in the nose and stupid heavy v in the back all the way off the tail. my all time favorite board! I can get a good long 10 on the right waves, rare, but I can do it. I’ve got an 11’ that has potential but I’m scared to go all the way up cause I don’t wanna get clocked by the bastard. anyway, my point is it doesnt have to be long for a big guy to get his toes on the nose.

I am 220+ 6’2" and 57yrs and Herb shaped me an 8’6" board that suprised me how it could noseride- he said its in the shape of the board. Guess the wave helps and a bit on position. Ive had 5s on the shorty as long as on my 10’er.

Or to put it another way: The shaping bay? Check out the archives, at the start of this year there were some real good threads with the big boys posting their respective opinions. If you are back at mowing the foam then use the UV resin and you should have a much better experience this go around. Good luck, Magoo p.s. I like the new look Mike(our host)! M

Talk to a reputable shaper, or the one who made your last longboard if you like what he made you. Tell him what you like and don’t like about the current model. Then tell him what you want out of the new and improved model. If he knows what he’s doing , you don’t need to worry about dimensions. I’d be happy to recommend a great shaper in your area. Email me if you’re interested.
