My cut laps are wobbly. Sometimes I have a hard time seeing through the resin tint if it is dark and I can’t follow the tape line. How does Cooperfish get those rail lines soooo straight?
a good tip when dealing with opaque or dark lams is to shine a light underneath the board with your main lighting turned down. another is to use electrical tape on top of your masking tape. this should give a nice dark edge…
the best do it buy eye from lots of practice. Its all in laying the tape down flowing in that perfect curve and then just letting the blade flow along the edge of the tape. For my last one, i used a rail marking tool to put a pencil line down to follow the curve and it came out really nice, very even - much better than my jobs by eye. You dont really need to see the tape to cut the lap - just put cuts (perpendicular to the length of the board) in your glass covered tape every 6-12’’ as you pull the tape up and over towards you(the cuts let the tape fold up toward you without pulling off the glass down the board) Then stick the razor blase right in the crease of the glass/tape edge, get the blade locked in and run it along as you pull off the tape. Angle the blade so it fits in that little crease but doesnt grab the foam. This needs a more delicate touch in the tip/tail area where there is more glass. You can grind down the excess glass over the tape there to be able to pull the tape up and have an easy cut.
