How do people or /if people think.

Does the average joe surfer feel that the average joe shaper is incompetant.

I ask this because of the recent afterburner thread and from others threads along the same lines .

One of the shops I sell boards through has stated stocking mass produced boards . same quality same hardware as the rest of the boards in the world. same price! why wouldn’t a surfer go for a handshaped master piece by a surfer for a surfer or would he go for a piece of shaped foam that has been glassed by someone who has never surfed and wouldn’t know if or what works for that matter.

Would a guitarist by a gibson or a gibson copy if it cost the same.

Then it goes back to ask the custom guy to make what you want and get it. I don’t for a minute believe that the market for mass production is not there , it is .

To my knowledge if there is a decent wave in 100 kilometers there is a board shaper or access to a custom factory. Why put up with nearly or does average joe just want the name on the decal who cares about quality, performance &soul. Then gets upset because the decal doesn’t count for sh*t when he comes in for a trade in.

Happy easter, I’ll be spending mine in the shaping room.

If I make tampons do I need a vagina? If I make eye glasses do I need to have poor eye site?

Some of the best glassers don’t surf and sanders and polishers, pinliners…

Most surfers can’t shape, but a properly dialed machine can produce and reproduce consistant crap to quality and all in between. They show up on time also.

buying a mass produced board has some advantages like no 6 week minimum wait.

no excuses from the machine when you by off the rack.

never bought a board with a trade-in consideration.

There is always the customer who is total performance freak and stickers don’t matter.

sell to them and just hope they ain’t cheapos asking for the bro deal.

if the board works well, who cares. The surfshop making up to 100% mark up on the chicom product sure isn’t complaining.

I think you are looking at it all wrong. I don’t blame the customer for the problem but for the faux gibson salesman. But it’s a free market and someday the hand made board may have a leg up in the market. I just hope the traitor middleman surfshop owner gets pushed out of the picture.

do you bring this up because your business is falling off or something?

Happy Easter to you also. I’ll be thinking about the Jesus.

As for business, never been busier . just get annoyed at the comparison of popouts to custom and the assumed value,

To make tampons you don’t need a vagina but to have used one or know how it works would be good.

as for the glasses you don’t need bad eyes but eyes do help. I would hate to buy spectacles made by a blind man.

If a person walks into an art gallery and says I have a monet copy I would like to sell he will get laughed out of the shop…

Your analogies even make less sense now. You have never been brought a surfers magic board and told to replicate it? “dude, my monet thruster is on its last legs and I need a new one for cheap and fast and really durable with swirls.” Shapers have been copying and stealing each others designs before there even was a pop out. I have had guys call to see if I can replicate a popout design!!!

Glad your business is hopping these days. Just keep on making the good stuff and your following will follow. I just don’t let it bother me.
