The Kingdom of Atooi is a new one for me. I am not sure where it’s boundries start and end. I am sure he did his violations in the State of Hawaii and subject to those laws. BTW, how was he declared Ali’i Nui!
Does the laws of Atooi follow the old KAPU system? People forget that punishment for violating the KAPU system was death. As a Hawaiian, I don’t think I want to go back to the old ways in it’s entirety.
Mahalo,
The Ali’i Nui of Swaylocks (AOL)
Howzit Uncle D, Years ago I was given prints of the Hawaiian islands from the 1700’s and Atooi was the name of Kauai then. Very interesting maps and they showed all the islands and their names at that time. Now if I could only find them, I could give you the names of all the islands at that time. One map showed all of Capt.Cooks travels through out Hawaii.Aloha,Kokua

Howzit Ambrose, Today while judging the first Pufferfish Volcom contest of the year Steve Valiere was telling us that Rob Pa said he was going to take the first dead whale and leave it on Mayor Baptists front porch. Dustin Barca won the pro-am division. Aloha,Kokua
The fact that Aloha is out of business isn't going to change the people on Kauai's mind about the Super Ferry. There has also been articles in the paper about Kona and the ferry, and how Kona is not set up to handle it. It was rammed down our throuts with no EIS and that is what upsets folks. When it did start running people were getting seasick or quesy plus it has problems with high surf( which they thought wouldn't happen) and they don't run it when the surf is big.Aloha,Kokua
You really think ALL people on Kauai don’t want the superferry? I think there should be an EIS for the matson and Y bros barges that go over there too. They could do a nice long study on all vessels at the same time.
Its a fricken boat, TRANSPORTATION, the same as oil tankers and cargo ships plying the seas.
Environmental studies ?? you guys are unreal about that!
Are you guys fighting a boat or urbanization?? and a natural influx of people??
You shouldnt be naysaying the thing because people get sick
or others dont like it. Thats nambypamby!
Let the market decide.
Let it float or sink on ridership.
come on, back off. At least 200- 247 Kauai residents are against it so dont’t be that way. It’s not just a fricken boat, it’s more like a death star. We need to apply the same level of scrutiny on all vessels ( or death stars) that enter Kauai’s harbors. It’s the only safe and practicle thing to do.
WWGAD? ( what would gov Ariyoshi do?)

What the people on Kauai wanted or didn’t want was never part of the equation and now people are wanting to know what we think, please. I guess it never mattered until people took matters into their own hands.
In retrospect I didn’t like the idea. What was worse was the backlash from people on Oahu and else where after the ferry was stopped from docking at Nawiliwili. The comments were pretty bad. I like it even less now for the rift that it has caused.
What I really feel about the issue is personnal and most wouldn’t understand. I’d say roughly half of the people I talk to on the island from various groups feel the same, but then again what I think and they think won’t matter. The Super Ferry people are committed to run. I predict they will run for a while then fold, so me pouring out my feelings about my home and community mean nothing to the Super Ferry people or any of you that don’t live here. I guess it’s more important to say if you come to Kauai by any means Super Ferry or not, be good, behave yourself, and be respectful.
If you come here and look for trouble or have a poor attitude, trouble will find you. There are many more people now that have their backs against the wall that feel threatened by outsiders then the old days, people are frustrated. The Super Ferry is just a sign of the times.
“If you come here and look for trouble or have a poor attitude, trouble will find you.”
From what I saw so far trouble was waiting in the harbor on surfbaords obstructing boat traffic and trouble was holding signs shooting stink eye and shaking fists in the air on the dock.
Thanks for the warm welcome neighbor.
I love your last paragraph. We are “outsiders” now? If it wasn’t for outsiders your micro economy would dry up and blow away.
Where were your state reps when the promises were made years ago? It was a great idea then. The sign of the times is not the super feryy but the arseholes who backed out of their word also known as llying. Don’t worry, Kauai will be humbled one day when the superferyy comes to their rescue with supplies, equipment and transportion in a time of urgent need. They won’t blink, hesitate or even think of not helping. The same goes for us outsiders too. See you when your back is really against the wall.
Howzit OTAY, Even with the state subsidizing it, it’s losing money when it runs. And they think that having a second one will help, just more money down the drain. State business laws will only allow you to lose money for 3 years then you are done. The last ferry didn’t make it so what makes people think this one will. I am so tired of hearing about how the ferry will save us after a disaster but we didn’t have one during the last 2 hurricanes so we will be OK. Supplies are flown in on Military planes and helicopters. Over the last few years the wind patterns have changed and Oahu is getting more inclimate weather and in the future Oahu could get the next big one, then the real havoc will start since the population is so much larger there. We went 8 weeks without electricity after Iniki how would Oahu handle that, not so well I think. Is the Super ferry going to be of any help under those circumstances? The owners of the company think they are hurting us by not coming to Kauai, but that’s exactly what we want. Quite a few of the people arrested during the protest are friend and they said they would gladly do it again even though being arrested again is a good possibilty. So far they have caught people trying to steal imu rocks from Maui and they also found a car returning to Oahu full of stolen goods from Maui, do you think that the people on Kauai want to see the same thing? Aloha from an Outsider,Kokua

Wow! your previous post you yourself call the Super Ferry the “Death Star” and now you say people on Kauai will be humbled one day? I think you would be surprised to find that from past experiences quite a few of us here on the island know not to depend on outside help. I’ve heard the “you kauai people will learn your lesson” before. That kind of in your face attitude is another example of what I was talking about, sad. What is your contribution to this issue? Confusion, frustration. As I said sad how people from elsewhere can have a strong opinion about how we should feel and live our lives. Why is this so important to everyone else? I’m done with this, it is a waste of my time and I apologize if you took my post the wrong way. The advice I gave was advice I give myself when I go to other places that I’m not from. It’s a way I was taught by my Kupuna to respect others and an easy way to make friends. Nothing more and nothing less. If you can’t see the wisdom in that then you really must be an outsider. Have a nice day.
Gentlemens, and others…
I claim NI status by having been brought in (though not born, nor do I presently live on) Hilo. Parents still there, one brother in Hilo, one in Kona. I may end up there myself.
This topic isn’t about making surfboards except in the most limited, peripheral way.
It is highly controversial and incites division and hard feelings.
It has attracted a hideous amount of bullshit, outrageous claims, outright lies, obfuscation and the list goes on… this has no place here.
Therefore, and with respect to the longtime members how have posted their heartfelt feelings, let’s not go into this highly charged subject on this forum.
