I recently got a 9’1"Y blank for free. Oh yeah! Anyway I don’t want to make a longboard out of it because I am not into that style of riding right now (modern longboard style). When I make another longboard it will be at least 10’. Anyway I have been playing with templates and I like the 6’10" to 7’4" range for this blank, but that leaves me with very little rocker ( like 2.5" nose rocker, before flipping it a bit and around 1.75" to 2.75" tail). My question, what is the flatest board you have ever ridden/made? I live in FL and have to deal with mush all the time and I like flat boards but I have not ventured into this area of flatness before. I can net 3" thickness on this blank and the longest I care to go is about 7’6". I am going to push the foil back on the blank. I want something I can get into waves early, pump the wall and is somewhat reponsive from the tail. Any thoughts?

Depending on how you like to surf, full template platters with low rocker can work very well in the type of conditions you`re describing… fast, too! Another viable option is to cut your blank in half and re-glue it to a slightly different rocker.

…My brother Ray’s 6’-5" blue twin fin fish on the board page has less that 1" of tail lift(3/4"),and about 2" nose kick. The rocker(what little of it there is)is continuous, very 70s ,very oldschool. …Yes,it’s works great for him.I’ve seen him do some crazy sh*t on it.Catches waves easily, and glides like a longboard, but turns well, either from a flat skate to a full rail pivot.Herb

If you want something that’ll go really fast go with a nice wide rounded pin. Don’t be afraid to keep the tail around 15" or so. The more you draw the wide point in the more straight line the outline will be and the more down line speed you’ll get.(sort of Wayne Lynch evolution style) For 7’6 I’d go around 20.75 for width if you wanta fly, if you keep the nose pretty generous say around 16" it’s be easy to catch waves with in small surf. 3" is good thickness. Run the deck doom well into the tail, Tail rocker a little less than 2" and nose rocker around 4.5 or so. Thin the nose out and put a slight dome on the bottom of it to cut the chop. Follow it with a short flat section and then go single to double concave, with a subtle vee in the tail that runs the final 1/4 or so of the board. Finally put fin boxes in so you can experiment with fin combination. You won’t be sorry the thing will come of the lip at warp speed! A second choice is a swallow tail of course. they are super in small surf and very fast and quiet manueverable. I personally like one with little wings about 8" from the tail to give a little extra width and quickness in turns. I have an old 7.0 of this configuration. It does really well in the pit. Let us know what you decide and congraduations on the good fortune of the free blank. I suspect you have a very rewarding project on your hands. Better Surfing, Rich
Thanks to all for the info. I was hoping for some positive feedback on the whole flatness issue. I was double checking myself to make sure I was not way off the mark with the idea. And Rich you’re right I do have a rewarding project on my hands. I just found out about 30 minutes ago that my wife and I are going to have a baby boy! My next project might be a 3’ mini tanker. Thanks again to all for the feedback. mike
I checked on line and all I could find was a whamoo frisbee named the pluto platter. I saw a site with Stu on it but it had on real pics on it. I would like to just take a look at it. Thanks.
He’ll change your life.

Go for it!the stubs we ride have 3/4" to 1" tail rocker and 3-4" of nose rocker, with some having as little as212" in the nose.Flat is fun and fast!

If you go extremly flat like only an inch or two of tail rocker how do you make the board still turn? I can understand that this little rocker work for a fish, but will it work for a thruster or a single fin? How much rocker does a retro singlefin have? thanks, Håvard PS. Congrats on the baby yet to be born, stoked for you.
I don’t have much experience with 70s single fins but I have done quite a few boards with low tail rocker like you mention (mostly eggy thrusters). As you know tail rocker is just one variable to how a board will turn. You can also manipulate other things like planeshape, fin placement, bottom contours, etc. & most importantly how you ride the board. It will take away from the ability to go vertical quickly. You can still do that, you just have to set up for it a bit. My question was really about such flat nose rocker. I did not want a board overly prone to pearling. I am going to make one 6’10" 15 1/8" nose 22" wide 15 1/4" tail with a rounded pin, thruster (those are ballpark numbers based on another board I made that I really liked). With all the responses, I think I am going to like the extra flatness. Thanks everyone for the info.
