how many layers of glass in a fin

Hi.

I’m about to start making my first fibreglass fin.

Can you guys let me know how many layers are required. I’ve got loads of off cuts of 4oz and 6oz glass.

Also… I plan to put some tinted resin in some of the layers. Can the tinted layers be layed up on top of the clear layers when they are both still wet or should I wait and let the clear go off before I lay up the tinted layers

Chip could you please send me the same message? Thank you

Lam 5 layers at a time, around 32 layers.

You can mix colors, but it shows in the final sanding.

Better to do 5 layers one tint, then 5 layers another, allowing just a little tacky cure time in between.

Check the archives, LOADS of information.

Bahne finbox fin tabs are 0.350 inches wide. One layer of six ounce is 0.01 inches wide. So, it takes about 35 layers to fit in the fin tab if you roll the layers properly and don’t use more resin than you need. 36 works well for me. Many like the max width to be 3/8 inch, or closer to 38 layers.

Side fins are 0.250 inch tabs instead (Futures or FCS), so more like 25 or 26 layers.

Again, check the archives, more info than you can shake a stick at.
