I have a great fish shaped by Steve Clark with, of course, the 6,2C. But I bought it stock, and to get the deck rocker as flat as possible, we had to hack it down to 6 foot. It still has a little deck rocker.
So, my obvious question: How far down can I bring the nose rocker on a 6,2C in order to make it super flat and also keep as much length as possible? I’d like to keep the board at 6,3 (the actual length of the blank, I think).
Also, what is the best density for a fish blank, and how does adding volan cloth compare with a 6+6 and 6 sanded or gloss and polish finish?
Thanks.
I would think by over flattening the deck rocker too much and keeping the total length on a 6’2C you might lose to much bottom rocker. That blank is kind of thin up at the nose tip to shape it in. but maybe not, go for it! I think it can be done. that’s what custom rockers are for. I have a custom fish that has only 2-1/4" nose rocker… or you might want to try the 6’9"A cut that down plus you’ll have a thicker blank to work from. You should be able flatten the deck rocker and still have enough foam in the upper 2/3’s to add some bottom nose rocker if you have to. Or just have Steve Clark shape you the 6’3" you want. I am sure he will figure it out and you get another smoking rad board… Just me .02
the door to the custom rocker holds in infinity of possibilities and the core foam remains protected ,
when the cut down and reshape of the rocker in this method reveals the soft core foam.
The foam being thus exposed is best served by adequate glass reinforcement to protect the potentially softer foam from pressure dents … ambrose…
Yes, too true, mow to much and it gets all rickety. but No ProblemO when using Walker blankety blanks. but they ain’t got no Fishy fish plank either.
Clark foam will make the thing as flat as a board if you custom order it that way. Otherwise, if you’re starting with a natural clark rocker for the 6’2C blank, and you want to maximize length (6’3") then you will yield a board that is not very “flat” in the nose. The 6’2"C blank has a lot of nose “flip” when compared to a very flat board like a long board etc. If you want flatten the actual bottom curve out (take thickness out of the middle of the blank) it really comes down to how thick of a board you desire, and how well versed in shaping bottom curves you and/or your shaper are. The 6’2C blank is somewhere around 2 5/8" thick I believe? So you could be ending up with a pretty thin board… -Carl
No, the 6,2c can be netted thicker than 2 5/8. It can get darn close to three. The Clark site says 2 and 7/8. But the thickness carries out to the rails. It’s a great blank. I’m going to try to get one super flat. Any suggestions how I would do this?
The current nose rocker is 5 inches, but I’m thinking of telling them to drop it 2.5 from center. That should flatten out the deck fairly well.
Man, I wish I knew what others did with the rocker before shaping. I’d like to know works.
just plan out your intended rocker on the deck of the finished product, and order your blank to those specifications. that way, you just skin the deck, smooth it out, and the top side is done…minimizing the foam taken off the deck to maximize strength.
YEA JUST WHAT BRANDON SAYS…ORDER THE ROCKER IT TAKES A WEEK IN CALIFORNIA THEY DELIVER A LOT pardon my tone I’m excited…ambrose…
