how much weight is too much? mine is 15lbs if i did the math right. it seems to catch waves, turn etc. but the first day i had it out it was chest high and clean, pretty much perfect testing waves. what will be my disadvantages because of the weight? dimensions are 6’2" 22" and 2 5/8" thick. glassing is polyester and 6/4 top and double 4 with a fin patch. and thanks to swaylocks, couldn’t have done it without ya.
holy hell thats heavy
That is considered “heavy” by almost all builders, but…
If it works fine, is strong, turn easily and does what YOU want it to do, it’s a good weight!
Prolly not the best weight for the “twist and shout” grems, it’s fine for carving and banking turns, using the rails and projecting speed and distance.
Prolly should weight the board again.
LeeDD is right . You might want to re weigh that thing. My 9 footers don’t weigh that much.
You need to take out some of the wax, bro! hehehe
Sounds heavy. Did you convert it from something since math is involved? How much did it weight in kilos?

Håvard
I weighed the board again holding it under my arm on the scale again 15lbs. how much should a keel fish of these specs weigh? my 9 foot + longboards, not homemade, are definitely 20 plus lbs. so i’m not anti weight. i am just curious about where it should come out. i gonna ride this one for a while and then make a light one hopefully glass it better. i think the hotcoat and gloss coat came out too thick.
My EPS/epoxy fish at 6’8 is just under 4.5kg/10 lbs with fins and leash, glassed 3x4oz deck and 2x4oz bottom plus fin patch. It propably weights more than you would expect from a pro shaper/glasser (7-10 lbs???) Definitly ride it, if it doesn’t seem to have any ill effects from the weight, why make another?

Håvard
You already surfed it, right? So…how did it go? If you liked it, the weight is fine. If you didn’t like it, maybe its too heavy.
Don’t focus on numbers on a scale when you can review the performance value yourself. Numbers are meaningless in the face of application. Think about it - airplanes shouldn’t fly, metal boats shouldn’t float, 300 lb linemen shouldn’t be able to run 4.5 40’s. But they all do. Just surf it.
And if it sucks, grind off the glass & do it over.
Howdy,
Mine weighed in at 9.5 lbs.
5’9 x 21.5 x 2 5/8
6 oz hull with 6 oz fin patch
5.2 oz carbon deck patch under 4 oz over deck and rails
with fins and leash plug
sanded hotcoat w/ acrylic matte sealer.
Not a keel fish but a quad… close enough,
My first fish was a 6’2 and was about 14 lbs.
the weight was really fun when rocketing down the face
Disadvantages, tired arms from carrying it?!?
I think Paul Jensen’s wood fish was about 13 or so lbs… for a 5’10"
I like my boards like my girls, just a tad heavy in the tail area…
Thanks for the replies. i couldn’t take it anymore and went to a surfshop a weighed a channel islands fish 6’2". it was 9 3/4 lbs not volan. i am not paranoid about my numbers but was curious about the weight of a classic fish. but i rode it again last night and it flies. rock on swaylocks.
my board probably weighs around 15lbs. its glassed double 6 on top with single 6 on bottom. really thick heavy hotcoat and decent glosscoat. surfed it in up to 8’ point surf and kneeboarded it in 8-10’ hollow beachbreak. recently replaced the wax and there is no damage to the deck at all, not after a few air drops, or getting sucked over the falls kneeling on it or running into rocks. it carries momentum like crazy and is one of the boards i will keep till its dead.
