So ive been taking my boards to be glassed for the past 6-8 months and was starting to wonder if what im getting charged is right. It probably is, i was just curious to see what you guys thought
this is what ive paid for some of my boards
5’6’’ to 5’1’’ = 260
6’ = 280
6’3’’ volan = 320
7’7’’ spray and clear = 320
8’5’’ clear = 330
9’6’’ spray and clear = 380
5’7’’ free lap tint = 300
Im in sydney acqua. ive glassed a few boards, but stopped around board 20. dont have to much time or the space to do it properly. I just prefer to get the shape right and leave it to the pros.
I save a lot of money by doing it myself - but if I was getting paid those prices, I sure wouldn't be making much money either! So it all depends on how you look at it.
I glass my own and those prices seem crazy high to me. But then again, if you have to pay someone else to do it you ought to be paying $20+ an hour for the labor then the materials to glass the board and dispose of the waste, etc. It adds up.
To me, $20 an hour is way too low for a skilled craftsman.
My plumber charges me $80 an hour. A pro shaper gets $50 to $100 an hour. A raw laborer, digging a trench costs over $15 an hour if you include insurance.
So a glasser/ sander, with skilled experience, and about $200 in tools ( a single sander) in a shop (got to pay the rent and lighting) should be in the $50 dollar an hour range minimum. Try getting that dent in you fender fixed at an auto body shop for $20 an hour. Auto body and glassing are similar skill level trades.
Those prices are reasonable considering current economic conditons. The price of a gallon of gas on the West Coast US is $4.00 plus. Resin is a petro product. Earlier in the year I was paying $220---240 for a shortie and $320--350 for a long. Every time the price on a barrel of "Saudi Gold"goes up a dollar you can expect the price of a glass job to jump as well. The days of $200 and $300 glass jobs are over. Under the current administration you can expect to pay $300 and $400 in the future. You can't glass a surfboard with wind energy.
I would think not many see $20 per hour in their paychecks. You still have to pay the rent and utilities. But if you are using the same skills as another trade, (drywall taping, auto body, house painting, finish carpentry) and getting paid half as much, time to switch jobs.
Unless you are doing a specialty work such as epoxy, bagging, color work, high gloss, and composites, you are toast.

What does a free lap tint look like....I'm not sure I'd pay for something like that?
I understand that glassing is piecework. Divide the cost of job by the number of hours taken. We live by the day, month and year. We spend the same way. Makes sense to know what we earn by the same measure.
So what do you charge for a 6-0 trifin? How long does it take you, and what are you spending on materials? You have posted enough of your boards for us to know you do high quality work.
As a contractor I am sure you can hire illegal Mexican drywallers and painters all day long. Quit whining and either glass your own or "render unto the workman the wages he is do"
