How thick is too thick

You can always rely on Devo! I remember my uncle use to wear those flower pot hats that devo wore on their album covers. Looked bloody stupid when you saw him come out of a supermarket back in old days! Good surfer though.

cheers Joe

Nathan, I can’t compare 'boo to ply. But compared to balsa, its lighter (doesn’t soak resin a bit) and stronger…but also stiffer. In terms of construction, it is a bear to work with. On the quad, I didn’t make real sandwiches. I bagged on the bamboo with foaming PU glue underneath. The blank was a rockered, foiled, contoured rectangle at that point. Then I cut the template with a long router bit and attached the d-cell rails. It is light, strong, and very, very stiff. Good for a quad, wouldn’t want to use it on a longboard - stiff=corky.

the thick board revolution

Thank yew Mr Arbuckle

…ambrose…

13’-8" long, 26 1/2" wide and 7 " thick.

Gary Young gold…

the cost of that type of rotary cut bamboo veneer used for that would’ve been equal to an ounce or more…

good stuff!

Probably big enough to float Brudda Iz or…

Akebono, Mushashimaru and Konishiki

SIX FEET…

…UNDER…then it too late,as well as too thick.

“We built a 9’6” big guy high performance board with a “step rail” design to handle the extra thickness. The measurements are 9’6" x 16" x 24" x 14.75" x 4.75". Nose rocker is 5.75" and the tail rocker is 1.75". This should float a 275 lb. big guy."

This something we built last last year using a windsurfer blank. The funny part about this board was that a 185 lb. early fortish guy bought this board from me last week I told him that this is too much board for him but said that this is exactly what he was looking for. He wanted something that foated extremely well, under 10’ and could turn well. He tried the board and loved it because he caught everything! I guess to each his own!

Aloha,

D

Well I just found my old thread, so I thought an update was needed.

Heres the board I came up with. It ended up at 3’1/4 thick. At the glassers at the mo so soon as I get it back I’ll update again.

cheers Joe

hi joe, if the board doesn’t ride that well you should give bennys advise some credit. i’ve been surfing bigger boards for years (75kg-6’7board) and learned by building. my best small wave board is 6’3 x 1 3/4(concave 1 1/2) x19 1/4 wide point far behind middle wiiiide nose. it is very easy to paddle and a great wave catcher. flat rocker and planning area is the key.

the left board

Anything over three inches is pretty thick.

This one was a custom order from a few years back:

Sorry about my habit of using a fisheye lense… Board is 5’7" x 19-1/4" x 1-7/8"min & 6"max thickness.

Believe me, it took a lot (too much?) discussion to bring this one about. His rationale was pretty sound,

the hump is to aid in paddling (he presses his chin on the hump) and the deck where he stands is concave.

Turned out the balance of the board was pretty good. The guy can do air 360’s with it FWIW, I have some vid of him surfing pretty well on the thing.

If it worked super-well, I would have made a ton of them. This is the only one I made.

Would love to see more pix of that board, just out of curiosity… Perhaps the video as well? Never seen anything like it. Almost looks like you should ride it sitting down… With a paddle…

Joe,

thats a far 3/4 from 4

was hopin youd surprise us with a 4" fish.

oh well, looks good

Three recent big boards I’ve made are right at 5" thick. If somebody thinks that’s “Too Thick”, it’s OK… I’m over it. More than a few have figured out that paddle/surf or Stand Up Paddle/surf hybrids can be a lot of fun.

Once you get your head around the idea of not carrying the board under your arm because of width or thickness, a lot of doors open. Width and thickness can be a good thing if the waves don’t require a thinned out swizzle stick.

I’ve also been working on a finger-hole handle to deal with extra wide/thick boards so you can carry them under your arm. They install just like a fin box. These work great on paddleboards or big thick surfboards.

John,

When I first saw the picture of the hand grips I thought of brass knuckles for the line-up. Could you imagine havine your board ripped away by the wave and one of your fingers getting stuck the the little hole? Yikes!! Off to teach the little savages. Mike

It didn’t look quite right at 4", but I’ve kept the thickness on the rail and given it a nice beak!

cheers Joe

BRILLIANT! John you are a constant source of inspiration for “out of the box” stuff. Still, I’d like to be there when you propose to retrofit the Commadore’s flagship. “It’s a surfboard not a bowling ball godammit!”

I like that one… I would like to try it.

Cool idea, John! I ran into someone down at Foam, Fins and Fiberglass who suggested grabbing sort of a recessed plastic handle thing from Home Despot, I think bath department. Yours looks pretty easy, though.

I’ve been surfing my 8ft, 4 1/4" thick Thing, and having a blast. The thickness isn’t an issue. It does have other issues, and it does look pretty funny.
