It depends on how responsive you want your mat to be. The 70d/70d mats are most responsive but can be harder to ride. Different mat construction for different conditions.
This was and has been one of the best threads ever posted on Sways. That Seattle Fabric source is fantastic. The technical stuff and the design theory is worth the read even if I never build a mat . Haven’t ridden one since those yellow and blue rental mats back in the day at Avila Beach, Ca. Carry on gents.
I’m curious to hear how your experiences went with your diy surf mat compared to the Krypt. Please update us!
Hey mate where abouts in Aus are you located, id love to come check out your mats and pick at your brain
Hi Theo, I’ve given all my mats away or ridden them into destruction. I’m absolutely sure I have none of mine left. Anything you’d Ike to discuss we can do here so others can join in.
And that was the END of that thread.
Haha I am casually perusing this thread for some ideas / inspiration for an upcoming project, mostly just checking the pics at this point. I can’t pop up anymore at 70 cuz of hip issues so I’m exploring prone craft options (& SUPs)
That Seattle Fabrics is a great source. From what I see everything needed.
Not yet! Surffoils I’m in Aus and finding it really hard to get the right material, any leads ? Please & Thankyou
Good to see you onboard. I’ll let the other do the pre flight checklist with you.

Lucky bugger! Beautiful part of the world. My condolences on the State of O the other night!
Hi everyone. Ive been read this entire chat for like 3 Hours now. Ive understood almost everything like design, glue / prep. Wondering about materials.
Can i just glue the heal sealable stuff together? Dont have much facilities for that welding stuff.
And what materials should i buy? Using the seattle fabrics, looking ar 210D coated Oxnard(nylon) . Its coated in urethane.
Will that work?
This will be my first mat and ive never done it before. Looking to make it similar as possible and may use my friends 4th gear flyer template. Do you know what thickness / material he uses. Cheers all. Thanks, a bit late to the party. For San Diego California
