How to build a UV cure box?

Yorky, its a solarium . Plenty for sale in the bondi area, and i'd imagine an imperial shitload up on the goldie he he

Aha, ok. You could try the solarium idea. At least its portable, and its got shit loads of lights on it. Doesnt take up much space by the look of it.

Yeah, True.

I agree I’ll do that, might try for 3 Boxes.

Lam 3 boards at a time sounds like it would be a bit less of a hassle then ping ponging back and forth…

Cheers

There might be a bit too much UV floating around the room each time you turn it on. Could cause a few problems.

Here's the name of the foil sided insulation that I have used in the past;   Reflectix  comes in a non insulated roll of 48 inches  x 125 foot long for $72.00 US.  Double sided foam center comes in rolls of 16 inches x 25' for $15.00US and 48 inch x 25 foot for $39.00  US.   I used the insulated on the last box I had because I couldn't find the non insulated.  I don't feel the insulated is necessary even if you are going to use the box to cure Epoxy.  The Refectix foil with UV lights would get plenty warm/hot if left on for awhile.  If you've ever been in a grow room you know what I mean.

I just found a place that sells 180W UV solariam lights…Thats some serious wattage.

2m or 6.5 feet.

I don’t want over kill or a crazy power $.

Mc Ding,

Mate do you think 180W is to powerful?

scot… i have exactly that same model… i threw the stand away and just hung it off the wall… its been going faultless for more than 10 years… you would remember using it when you worked at my place yorky…

Some UV lights are extremely harmful to your eyes, so be sure to take the necessary safety precautions. I’ve also seen something about tanning lights causing skin cancer, so think about that as well. Lights come in a various sections of the UV spectrum, so you should check on which one the resin is designed to work with. I was looking at UV-a or UV-b a while ago, but I decided against doing it.

I know that UV lighting is used to kill bacteria in air conditioning systems. We are never allowed to see the lights with our eyes when they are on. I think all you need to do is close the box before turning the system on and you’ll be fine.

Yeah;  I always took necessary safety precautions.  Always wore my Ray-Bans and sunscreen of the proper UV rating before my Coppertone tan.

Howzit yorky, 180W is fine especially when ou think bout how many atts there is in the sun. I only had 40 watt bulbs and wouls have loved to have more wattage.Aloha,Kokua

Thanks kokua.

Yeah Dave, true, I remember the one you had, same as.

It obviously depends on the cost of a kilowatt-hour of electricity where you are.

Seven lamps at 180 watts each, operating for an hour consumes = 7 x 180 = 1260 watt-hours = 1.26 kilowatt-hours (kwh).  According to my recent billing (San Diego), I used 265 kwh last month at a cost of $35.72 (US). So each kwh here costs $35.72 / 265 = $0.135 per kwh(US). Hence the cost of operating all 7 lights for an hour** here in San Diego** would be:  $0.135 x 1.260 = $0.17 /hr(US) .

You didn’t mention if the 8 cent quote was in US or AU dollars/cents (and if AU dollars, I don’t know the current conversion rate), so I can’t directly compare the cost here in SD with your cost in AU. If your quote of 8 cents was in US cents, then your cost per hour would be about half the cost here.

(Edit:  The US and AU dollars currently differ by only 1.2 cents)

Yorky -Sorry I missed your question.  No I do not think that 180 is too much.  Once you do a couple of UV boards and get an idea of how much time you need per board put a timer on the power source, no problem then.  By the way;  I used a shaping room last weekend at  my glasser's that had twelve foot single bulb side lights.  A four footer linked to an eight footer single each side.  I wasn't shaping anything over 10' but I liked the extra light at the ends of the blank.  Up to now I've only shaped with eight foot lights.  I'm setting up again after the first of the year and will probaly go with twelves.  With a four and eight combined the room could be set up placement wise to use only the eight footer if desired.  Twelve foot of side light might be too much for shorter blanks.  I guess it is all in the length of the room and the position of your shaping rack.  Any way just a few thoughts.

hi, would love to see pics of your set up once you have it done. are you gonna make a box or make something to go over the board??

Ok I ordered 7   180w x 2m (6.56 feet) for my UV box…800 hour life

The company I bought them from said it would cost 8 cent per hour to run all 7 lights…Thats only what he told me so???

that sounds good if hes a straight shooter.

.

I just bought that tanning bed exactly the same as the one above and it works amazingly. Has a 20 minute time and cures the board in no time. I am so stoked on it, now i never have to worry about it being rainy or cloudy.

What a great ideal!

Hurry up and get that thing done so we can get the turkey in there and cooken !!!
