How to Get a Blood-Red Tint??

Usual red tint is too red. How can I get the color like this pic? Epoxy and Poly?

add a bit o black “slowly”

Hey 220,

Buy red pigment from www.fiberglasssupply.com Use as much pigment as desired. Not too much you will get it near opaque. Not too little you will get PINK!! Run tests on scrap foam as you mix. Good luck.

Hey 220grit,

That board is sick!

I had luck with FGH’s red tint also, and then add just 1 drop of blue.

The effect of this won’t show until the resin cures, so DON’T over-do it!

Blood-Red tint looks really good.

Be sure it is all tint (rather than opaque) so you still have that deep look to it.

Good Luck!

Not really related but…

The best thing I ever saw regarding the topic of blood red tint was in the movie “The Red Violin” one of my all time favorites.

You want to err on the side of opaque. It takes more pigment than you think to get that deep red. Trust me, it’s really tough to convince your buddy that a. it’s not pink, it’s SALMON, and b. that SALMON is really in right now.

HA! Salmon. Ha! Ha!

“It’s NOT PINK, it’s salmon.” That guy’s bummed.

Just tell 'em, hey, pink is the new black…

It’s actually darker than it appears in the photo. Lots and lots of red tint. The red tint available here is weak, and unless you add heaps, you get pink. You can add just a hint of gray/black, or even a little tiny bit of blue tint.

my question is …

apart from an invisible [?] stringer , any reason why NOT to use pigment ?

[and you could always pigment the blank , with the stringer masked off , then clear laminate over that [after removing the stringer tape , like I forgot [d’oh !!] to do once

“salmon” …I LOVE it !

Many people seem concerned as to how they will look in the eyes of others, out there. You should not ride a pink surfboard, that’s girlish. You should not ride too gunny a board unless it’s 15 foot. You should ride a fish because it’s the “in” thing to do.

BTW, when I say “out there”, it’s just the same everywhere, I guess. Why can’t you just ride what you like? I have had pale boards, I like light blue and I even had a pink and light blue board once. I’m not gay. I’m not a girl either. What’s wrong with salmon or pink, as long as it makes you feel good? Having fun is the name of the game, not fashion. Or is it?

I think you missed the point.

I went for red, didn’t add enough pigment and turned up with pink.

Hell, the first board I ever made had a bright pink sray job, and I did it on purpose.

It’s actually quite easy. When I do blood red boards I make a batch of a opaque maroon color first. That would be a big scoop of red, a small scoop of blue, and a tiny dash of brown. It’s actually closer to a deep purple. Now I take that and mix it into the resin bucket, this is my base color. Now I start adding more red tint into the mix until I get that blood red. Keep fussing with the colors until you get it just right. Lastly I add a bit more red opaque, because when you think you got enough color…you’r not even close.

The red tints now a days ( those tiny 1/4 to 1/2 oz bottles) are a joke. They require you to add about 2 oz per qt to get a real color, but with red you can keep adding little bottles and never get that color, you’ll never get a deep color unless you add some dark base to it. Blue is the same thing. You can add 4 oz of tint to a qt. and never get the deep blue color. You got to add a dark base.

That board in the picture has a heafty amount of opaque in it, thats how they acheive the color.
