Howard Duc

Anyone out there in Orange County know if HD is still shaping boards. Maybe the best natural shaper Ive ever seen. It always took about 4 times as long to get a board as he told you. He was also famous for telling you a price than telling you that you still owed him money (always $50) a month or so after you got your board. He was in Hawaii (mostly airbrushing) in the early 90’s then he was back in OC in the mid 90’s than I moved to the central coast (slo) and lost track of him.

aaahhhh does that bring back memories. used to ride for him. remember rick plecia. have not heard anything about him though. every now and then you will see one of his boards on ebay. i think i still owe him about 50 bucks now that i think about it. but he still owes me a board, last i heard it was in the sanding room.

Jack Sikes (lineup) and Bucky (pocket pistols). I think Bucky was steve olsen’s, the skateboarder, brother,he worked for lance collins. I rode lances boards and richie’s. I always liked richie’s boards. I heard richie was selling cars or real estate.

I just saw Ritchie last month at a birthdy party. He was working at Connell Cheverolet. Now he is the stay at home dad with 3 beautiful little girls. He just got back from Hawaii a couple pf weeks ago. He is building a house in Newport Shores. Lance, Greg Mungal, Ritches mom and sister all moved to Kentucky or something like that. Lance comes out every two weeks for two weeks to run the shop and shape boards and such. But he is the same crazy ass, funny, and super friendly guy he always was.

You can get ahold of Bucky over at www.skaterbuilt.com and yes,he is the older brother of skateboarder famed Steve Olson. They’re are originally from the SealBeach/Rossmoor area.Herb

Oh yeah, HD Lipsticks. They were the hot ticket back in the day (normally 8th grade). All of our friends were getting either those or Mike Kovich shapes. Someone’s uncle shaped SeaSnake Surfboards, we all wanted “team” on our boards, and he would put whatever you wanted on it. A board with TEAM was the driving force behind our board decisions. Ha.

When I made the screen for my boards, I couldn’t resist. All in jest. So if you’re ever surrounded by “Team Widow Maker”, just know your life is in danger. It’s not that they’re (we’re) trying to drop in or run each other over, but back in the day, you did the same thing. Ha. Oh yeah, have your kids move from the shore break too. Swimmers are no safer.

Soooo??? Does anyone know what happened to Mr. Duc? Or what he’s doing?

Boy, does that trigger memories. We use to park at the sheet metal parking lot off of Lake and PCH(in HB). We would call it Team Sheet Metal. Then there was Team Duct Tape.

totally remember Team Sheet Metal! I used to live with Howard and Lance Cook at a shop they opened in the 1980’s. I haven’t heard anything regarding either one for years. Also worked for Mike Kovich making early Billabong t-shirts and then at the glass factory in Santa Ana that Lance and Howard were involved in toward late 80’s. That’s the last I’ve seen of HD. Garth Tarlow at O’neill, (if he’s on here) would know probably know his whereabouts, he was a Lipstick “Team” rider, haha. That was such a big deal to get those lams. I had stacks, since I worked at the factory, hahahaha. What a blast that was making fins, dropping of boards, making fin rope, then the entire company going to Todo Santos in like 1986??, whenever there was a good south swell. HD was the first person to take me there with Jason Hoy (Team Rider) his buddy Jamie, a regular at Blackie. The all tore it up: Thor’s Hammer, Killer’s and Urchins.

Hmm.  Well that's one guy I had never heard of.  I'm not suprised though given my rural background.  Sounds pretty funny and interesting though.  I was just asking G' Ratt the other day if he knew of Steve Meisinger.  Another talented OC unknown, who spent some time in Cayucas during the early 80's.

By the way;     Lance had a surf shop in Pismo Beach for awhile .  70's if my memory serves me well.  All these people moving to Tennessee.  The namesake of "Pancho's Surf Shop" recently sold out to partners and moved to Tenn. as well.

Funny I knew everyone mentioned in this post  pretty well,  Howard was definitely talented, but a big dark side he always battled with.  Lance Cook had his own talents was a pleasure to be around.  Nonetheless, Lance Collins was the man, and nobody could airbrush as quickly as Bucky, except Lance Collins, but then nobody could shape as quickly as him either.  Jack Sykes what a great guy, he probably would still be polishing for Wave Tools, if Collins didn’t like his daughter Duranne liking him; Jack still has a funny sense of humor that borders on evil, but all in good fun.

back in i think 2008 i know that Greg Mungel was back in san diego because i worked for him and he taught me how to glass then he got screwed over on a business deal and moved back to Tenn. and since then he has been going back and forth from socal and Tenn. off an on but i havent heard from him in some time though

Good times,

he was defiantly the mad scientist when it came to making boards

i was so lucky to be able to learn from him and i got alot out of it
