So I have my 6’11" single fin Liddle dialed in but I recently acquired a 6’6" Liddle smoothie with the three fin set up and I am having some trouble with fin placement.
Where do I start with the side fins? Should the side fins be infront or behind the center fin? Do they have to be at the same points in the boxes? (I was kind of thinking that maybe I can move one fin further back on my heel side… would I even want to do that?)
When I had the three box versions, I would dial the single in first then put the side fins so that their leading edges were even with the center fin. You can start moving them around from there. That set up seemed to work best for me. I’ll be interested in hearing how it goes for you. Some folks like 'em, some can’t feel the difference.
I found they fought the turn you when you really layed it over hard, especially on my mp3. I felt it more on a set of side fins that were a little thicker. They definately make the board more user friendly.
Definately shoot Greg an e-mail as the parallel set up might not work as well with the shorter boards.
i’ve had a couple of those. always set 'em up as lee said.however, the sidebites got smaller and smaller until they were just nubs…now it’s back to one fin only.greenough had same experience with his spoons.built a twin fin and kept moving them towards center, and eventually ended up with a single fin. seems to work best with hulls.mind you though his hulls were deep. greg rides the 2 plus 1 setup where he surfs, but the waves he’s dealing with are a whole lot different than typical cali point surf …
Matt and LeeV, thanks much for the responses… very helpful and insightful.
I bought the three fin set up because I was struggling at the beach breaks on the hull going backside. Especially on steeper takeoffs where there is not enough time or room for a round bottom turn. I figured the shorter length coupled with the three fins and a planshape that was not as committed of a true displacement hull would help.
Anyone else with and opinion on asymmetrical fin placement?
You bet, all of these hull threads are better than porn. ANd it helps to keep the mind sharp when it’s soo flat and there is no swell on the way (Arrrggghhhh!).
On the ones I have with 3 fin set ups, as long as the middle fin has a narrow base, I run them in line and centered, which places tyem about 1/4 to 3/8" further back from the leading edge of teh center fin. Thas has worked well for me. The center fin is about 1" to 1.25" from the front of the box.
Small surf… i have been surfing the 6’11" for the last four mornings by myself at a local bechbreak and have been having an absoutle blast. the weather is flawless and knee high is fine if there is no one else out. get some trim.
