That would be great Matt. What time are you starting? No chance for a dawn patrol session?
naw- i’m really not a morning surfer-my eyes can’t take the direct hit from the rising sun, plus i prefer to let the afternoon winds and tide do their thing…
matt - tell me y’re using a Weber.
The event sounds like fun but i’m probably gonna’ be out of town that weekend on a backcountry adventure. If anything changes (my plans or the date for the get-together), then I’ll try to stop by and bring some of the fleet with me.
It’d be fun to trade boards and try out some other hulls.

a weber surfboard or a weber bbq? i’m using a big ol’ pit with 12 feet of grill that cranks up and down- a combo of mesquite and oak wood.tri-tips and chicken!
i’m talking BBQ – and that what you say is very acceptable. i didna wanna have image of you as a man who knew something good ruined. ( like using a Fiesta gas grill)
Tri-tips? what’s that? beef brisket?
I met with Stu from Ice9 this morning and they’re interested in giving us a blank or two for this thing to give away/award or do whatever with…haven’t talked to him much more about it but i thought that was pretty cool of them!

Ummm, Jas… Tri-tips are an integral part of BBQ’s from Santa Maria to San Diego. They’re the bottom cut of a sirloin that used to be ground into hamburger. In Santa Maria Ca. butchers learned that the triangle shaped cut was perfectly marbled for BBQ’s. Ten years ago, not many people outside of Central/Southern Ca. knew what they were. Today, you can get em in Colorado, New Mexico and other western states. It’s an incredible cut of beef for BBQ’ing.
I’m not sure what the shipping laws are but, if it’s legal and not too expensive, I’ll send you a couple on dry ice. With our family recipe of course!!!

marc – awfully appreciative of the offer… but there’s no way customs here gonna allow that. i’m just getting done with some grilling myself here … got some pals over for some grilled grouper and some smoked country-style ribs ( dry rubbed)… haha. i actually looked the tri-tip thing up on google… recogize the cut, but then it’s got a different name when you move away from CA i guess.
hey in cyberspace it don’t get much better than this! a hull thread, with some BBQ jargon/technique/talk thrown in …
T’anks, briddah.
Damn I love grouper! Grouper samitches and ice cold beer, sittin’ on the porch in a raw bar in Clearwater, FL. Oooh Yeah!!!
mijknahs brought out the 9’4" Spence double stringer today. What another gorgeous wave ridin’ vehicle!!! Again, I’ll wait for Jim to post the details.
sounds good. I’ve got the 8’ Liddle with extra width, Hawaiian model and the 7’ Pescado thick and wide.

Maybe Malibu or Leo Carillo would be better for an all day event? They should have better conditions (sideshore/offshore) this time of year unless it rains. Plus Malibu is such a long spinning wave even when small. Goes so well with hulls.
I’ve found that the wrapping point break at County Line has worked pretty well for hulls if there’s not too much south in it. Leo gets so crowded. Malibu I have only longboarded years ago, so don’t have experience at 2nd and 3rd points, but have seen the videos of hulls working well there so I’d be interested in trying it. Stables can work well in the early morning and tides don’t seem to mess with it too much, but hot shortboarders tend to dominate there. The tide on April 12th is a -0.3 low at 10 a.m. coming down from about 3 feet at 6 a.m.
The reason I bring up Malibu is that it tends to work all day even when on-shore everywhere else (unless its a south wind…). Stables could be fun but don’t know how long it will last as far as winds go. Leo is off-shore with the prevailing NW afternoon wind but the wind can get too strong and there’s not as many take-off spots as Malibu therefore less waves to be had. Plus Malibu would be more in the middle for any OC people that want to come.
i tend to agree -winds and conditions at stables this time of year are generally sketchy…plus it’s not the most ideal hull wave…(though on the right day it can be…)
The original idea was malibu or down in the area, then it moved northward, Im up for whatever everyone else wants to do!
the 'bu is always nice, leo is a favorite of mine also…
I’ve reconsidered as well. With a low tide and the tendency for spring winds, Stables could be total crap! I haven’t surfed Malibu since 1984 so maybe it’s time to go back. However, how do you think the locals are gonna handle the 20 odd, frothing, hull invaders from outa town?
BTW- I’m still making a big ole pot of Jamaican Jerk Chicken stew in the afternoon back at our place. I realize the folks from L.A> and south are left out but…we’ll be making a new batch at the SA 2008 gathering.
I think we can take over the point with enough people!
It’ll be just another typical day of chaos… People who rip surfing next to people who are just learning. People who snake and get a lot of waves and people who are just buoys.
We’ll get waves…
20 frothing, hull invaders
April fools, right?

Yup! Probably won’t be 20 and I doubt anyone will be frothing but, more than 3 paddling out at any local spot would easily be considered “invaders”. I’m definitely interested in what kind of turn out there is. If the weather and waves hold up, it could be a good time!
