I tried to search our global friend goglow with “hull”, “hull concave”, “hull egg” etc. but nothing really interesting popped out.
A simple “hull” search in the forum bubble gives me plenty of very interesting results… I’ll remember next time !
If I manage to shape my board like yours I’ll be 110% satisfied ! It has very close dimensions and looks great ! Thank you for the exemple !
In the “post your hull picture” I found severall shapes like this one (posted by mijknahs):
or this one (same member):
The nose comes with a Vee/spoon shape which looks interesting to enhance the smoothness of the glide in irregular waves. I think I’ll go for something quite similar to da5id's with a very light Vee/spoon from 12" to nose.
I’ll start near Xmas… Hope I’ll learn plenty reading your shaping adventure until then.
7’6 x 16 x 21.25 x 14.5 with single (nose) to flat to double w/vee through the side fins. I use this on chest high to double oh+ and it works unbelievably. I have pretty much abondoned my short board and gun for the most part. I made this same board several years ago as a flat bottom and it was a dog. The contours really do add to performance (assuming you don’t just want a cruiser) surfing on these shapes.
I don’t already know if I go for a cruiser or something more perf’. The waves I’m riding here are far from the one in your avatar !
But If one day I can go back home I’m sure I could have a good use of a funny board like yours.
That’s the advantage of planning ahead. I’ll take all pros and cons I can get.
I’ll probably make a trial version using house isolation EPS (20$ for a 2406012cm foam blank… worth…) so I can discover a little bit more the techniques.
Thank for the link, I already download a bit of those templates for some shortboard medium aroud 6’ and for the 7’2 and 7’6 egg.
I quit working soon -> going to buy some vinylic glue, a surform and some sand screen for this WE. If I manage to shape somehting not too shamefull I’ll post some pics.
I tried to get something looking like a board out of this isolation foam. That was quite a challenge but I learned a bit more and It encouraged me to do another trial before buying real blanks to work on.
First, the foam I used was way to light and the polystyrene balls did not stick to each other well so there was a lot of little holes.
2nd: I used standard vinylic glue to glued the 3 foam layer and let it dry for 24h -> it was not enought. when the planner hits the contact zone between the 1rst and 2nd layer it peels in big peaces, that’s why there’s some gap in the nose area…
The rocker should be more important, but because of the glue issues the thickness of the foam was not sufficient to do it properly.
Positive points: working with the planner is not that differents for foam thant for wood, I just set the cutting depth not too important to avoid mistakes. Surform is a great tool to use ! drawing guidelines to vut out the bevels is not that hard either.
Negative: the light foam acts a lot different from the hight density foam little peace I got from my TV packaging (use to test different rails shapes)… It’s lot harder ! So I can’t respect the lines I wanted to try and I don’t think I’ll try to sand it to get a cleaner results because all the balls come when I apply a little friction to the surface…
I’ll continue to read all the intéresting threads I can fing on the forum and come back with a “real” project soon.
