Yes! I’m glad to be close to RI…I heard about the beaches in Orleans Cape Cod being shut down from I guy I work with; I go there a few times a year. That sucks. I had a blast in RI this weekend. I went with my Olivia and our 7 month old son and my dog…surfed Hull cove in Jamestown saturday evening, only chest high, but fun. Drove to the lighthouse at pt Judith Saturday night, passed at least a hundred cars leaving when we arrived…there were cops directing traffic, even. Drove up into a packed parking lot, there were a hundred people just watching the waves in the dark, people were there til midnight. This type of surf happens more often on the west coast, I reckon.I don’t know how big it was that evening cuz you could only see the wash on the inside, but it was loud…tourists prolly thought it was fifty foot waves or something. Long night sleeping in the car, crying baby, panting dog…woke up to solid 10’ faces rolling in, some bigger on the outside. Watched the first guy paddle out at 5:30. I hadn’t surfed waves like that for 5 years, but I knew I’d be pissed at myself if I didn’t paddle out…went and got coffee, had a shit, ate some food we brought in a cooler, watched for a while…then paddled out, and had a fu#king blast! Probably 50 people in the lineup at that point, but they were breaking everywhere for half a mile, so no shortage of rides. Solid, 8-10’ faces, but forgiving…paddling through the impact zone wan’t even that bad for me, being a pack a day smoker currently (dammit). Very nice swell coinciding on a weekend, as I gotta drive 2 and 1/2 hrs to get to Judith. Good times!
Good weekend up in New Hampshire. These are some shots from Sunday.(Mid-Late Morning) It got a little bigger later in the afternoon. Saturday was a little overhead, inconsistent sets and kind of choppy/disorganised.
Here is a shot of the waves up in Nova Scotia :
I had a blast in RI, Sunday morning. I probablye saw you dpicton, I paddle out at 6 am, with the low tide and the solid faces, I tought I would have more trouble to go out with my 9’10, I just took a couple of good ones on the head before making it but nothing too bad. I get a bunch of really long rides that killed my legs and my arms to get back to the line up.
My only regrets is that the swell really dropped fast. Also my friends broke is leash and had is board dinged really bad in the rocks.
so when is the next one…
Speaking of closing down beaches,2 years ago we had a winter swell here that was BIG,and yes,I saw 3 parks closed as I recall.but It was because of flooding in the park from the waves, they didn’t have to worry about anyone in the ocean,it was so big.The regular spot I go to had Jaws size waves, going up the beach, over the 20 foot seawall, and breaking on top of the roofs of the pavilions,a goot 12 feet higher.A tourist that was laying down on a bench in a pavilion got swept off the bench, that’s when the park got closed.A couple friends that went out on jet skis said that boulders the size of houses were rolling around on the reef a half mile out a sea.Don’t know if I’ll ever see another one like that!
Dpicton and nicoprout, I probably saw both of you on Sunday morning at the lighthouse! What boards were you riding? I got to the lighthouse around 6am. I didn’t paddle out because the rips looked really bad. A friend of mine paddled out and we watched him get swept north for 100ft before he even got close to the lineup. It was bad to the point where we lost him for awhile. I was sitting/standing on the grass in front of the parking lot with his girlfriend who was snapping pictures and a friend of mine. He was out there for 2 hours and only caught about 6 waves. We stayed until 10:30 just watching the waves. Some of the best surf I’ve witnessed first-hand. Then we drove around looking for more protected spots. I put about 70 miles on my car that day just driving around Narragansett haha. The crowds were intense. I too got stuck in traffic Saturday night going to the lighthouse. Sooo many tourists.
The following video is of a beach known locally as Lecounts - Sunday August 23 2009. Bill may be peaking or slightly past its peak.
The place is run by the Town of Wellfleet. It really wasn’t all that great a break during Bill. I didn’t surf there.
As for beach restrictions and access during Bill, apparently each township makes its own policy. In Wellfleet, they allowed surfers in the water. The National Parks Service had their own policy.
Please note the conditions. … as in “this is why they closed down the beaches?”.
Also, regarding the life quards… I have no idea what it currently takes to be one on the Cape… I’ve always assumed that in the very least, being a powerful swimmer would be a requirement… but I quess each township has its own criteria.

Heres a link to a local photographers site loaded with pics from the swell we got from bill, the slideshow is really good.

Yeah Rachel and nicoprout, I’m sure we walked right by eachother. Me and my fam were parked in a white Jimmy on the east side of the building…Olivia was sitting with our boy in the grass on the cliff while I was in the water. Embarrassing to say here, but I rode my 6’8" wrv instead of a fish that I made; I brought the fish to try again having only rode it once before, but I looked at the waves and thought well, what if this thing craps out on a bottom turn…those were the only 2 boards that I brought this time. The rips- yeah, I noticed that, so I got in down below the lighthouse to the right, ended up on the north side of the lineup by the time I got outside. Weird thing though, out there the current was pretty much south going, everyone paddling north to keep from ending up on the other side of the point. 6 waves in 2 hours? Sounds like about as many as I had, but each one was worth 20 of the waist-highs that we usually see! It was beautiful. OK I’m done, sorry for bumping this thread again.

Your area was arguably the best of Florida. We had freight trains, you had open faces.
Play ''find the Coil'' in that set of pics....
I’ve been to Amelia Island recently… a local turned me on to a Little island just to the south. Wow. Great spot, and some really talented locals. Made the trip.
Little sharky, though…
I took some photos at Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, on Saturday August 22nd during Hurricane Bill. I think this was around Beach Access 9. Waves were way too big for my experience level..unfortunately I learned that IN THE WATER. So I took pictures after the bodyslams:

wish i would have caught waves like that during bill!
My buddy that surfs Fernandina several times a week was punched by a shark one day. Not too bad considering he's been going 3 times a week for the last 7 years!
Hey Orangeball… a couple nice shots. I live in FB and Bill was a lot of fun, best i have seen in a long time. Where do you usually surf? talking about sharks… I got hit by one recently heading out to the shoals on the SUP…
hey man, usually around beach access 8 or 9. if you ever see a mid 30's bearded white dude on a yellow 10'2" chris birch, that is probably my friend matt.
