I had mentioned in an e-mail to a friend the subject of converting a hybrid thruster to a 2 + 1 setup. In the back and forth the following question came up: Will longer hybrid thruster outlines and rockers allow such a coversion without becoming some kind of non-performing Frankenstein? We were talking about 7’3" and 7’10". Sadly, glass in fins. Which I guess brings up another question: can such a conversion be done and not thrash to board? Nels
I would think unless you kept the middle fin small you’d have too much fin surface area for a board that size.

Getting the ole fins of the board is not really that big a deal. You cut it off and grind the stub off until you get to the orginal bottom lamination. Ve sure to talk to a few of the local gurus who have a few years of experience under their belt and a few experienced shapers as well. Because I have fin boxes in my boards and can play around with combinations. IMHO a 2 to 1 set up isn’t as quick in small waves as a standard thruster but with the right combination I think it is faster down the line because you don’t have the larger rail fins working against each other. I project like this requires careful template and fin size choice to make the board perform at it’s maximum. The overall boards specks, rail and bottom configuration are what dictate how you set up the fins. So take you boards with you shop around and listen close to those who understand fin setups and how they apply to you surfing style and the conditions you’ll be surfing in. Mahalo, Rich
