Does this picture bother anyone else out there? Sanding fiberglass itch. Turn, turn, turn… Slot in. Ass-wiggle boogie. Grating sound of metal skate wheels from the 60’s anyone? Boogie boarder catching up saying, “I’m faster, I caught up with you!” as the wave finishes dribbling on the sand. Yeah, but that flexible slab of foam is created to slough-off any fall-line speed and slot you in to the pocket where you are surrounded by all that dynamic energy and man you just ego-explode how groovy I am surf-god better than anyone alive did you see that? What is the point? That ignorant mo-fo is wasting the surf-god tribunal’s valuable time again? Simon Anderson maiden flight at pipe thruster setup same as King Kamehameha’s foot drag to turn in that Hawaiian power? Line-up all the sacred sacks of testosterone and tell me what the heck is going on? Or not, it’s getting muy exciting in the garage these days…
This post has nothing to do with China or popouts or epoxy versus polyester, sorry.
Hell yeah, it bothers me!! Not one F’n logo or product identity is visible. How my “ACMESURF” stocks gonna go up if nobody knows how cool they are? And Who’s riding that board anyways? How can I emmulate him if I don’t know who he is! They are robbing me of identity and self worth.
new foils are going to make pictures liek that alot different, I’m mainly talking about the side fin. its like making a plane wing out of a solid flat piece of metal and then just angling it for lift. On a smaller scale, like surfboards, this concept could work to a degree…but my guess is new foils are going to change the game a bit…
I guess similar would happen on twin fins, someone more knowledgable on twin fins might have an opinion.
What it did that I could feel was a little turbulence and drag, not lots, but enough that I wanted to get rid of it. I’m not heavy, so maybe I’m more sensitive to those smaller diffferences than someone heavier.
Whether a properly designed asymetrical side fin would fix this for most people is hard to say. If that fin in the pic was asymetrical, I have a feeling there may still be that trail, just not as big perhaps.
I just like the purity sensation, and side fins are not my thing. I like turning using my body torque, position and balance, and using my heels and toes to fine tune, not the other way around.
Don’t confuse cavitation with ventilation and stall, this looks like ventilation to me.
It’s unlikely that a surfboard fin would ever cavitate without destroying itself. "Cavitation phenomenon is defined as the process of rupturing any liquid by a decrease in pressure at nearly constant temperature. Vapor cavities appear in the regions where the pressure is lower than the tensile strength of the liquid. These cavities can be attached to the solid boundaries or convected by the flow. The cavities driven by the flow in a region of high pressure will implode and generate
high-pressure pulses leading eventually to erosion." Ventilation occurs in hydrofoils near the surface where air is sucked down by the low pressure side of the foil.
The effects of cavitation on a metal impeller can be seen on the photo. I reckon you’d really know about this if it actually happened to your fins.
when the question was asked , " does this picture bother anyone ?" my first impression was , theres some serious ventilation going on there , so simon has that covered , the pressure has become so low its sucked air down from the nearest available source , so the cluster has value after all ??
and to dadio’s other hidden meassage , glassing and sanding channels is now a thing of the past , with new vacumn forming techniques and glass application methods or whatever else your using for a skin , the pain of intricate bottoms has been elimated …
daddio , those composite classes must be paying off …
Simon Anderson or simonc? One of the coolest toys (60s’) I had growing up was a little heater/vacuum forming unit that you could put a little sheet of plastic in and heat it up, put in the mold of your choice and draw that air out, whoosh… You could make various kinds of cars, boats and what nots. YOU can pull a FINISHED board from the mold… hmmm. We don’t need no stinkin injection mold. That thing is gonna be obsolete afore it hits the industrial unit floor. Metal skate wheels grinding on concrete soundtrack. I always loved the channel bottoms, not just for the added surface area, but for the way the rails would ride deeper in the water in that defined area. Epoxy does everything well. (Thanks Greg) Polyurethane is a better glue than foam, boogie boarder catching up, but not passing, injection molded foam sticking to inside of molded polycarbonate, then shearing off as it expands creating weak spots that will de-lam, Oh no! Warranty void, sorry son. I still remember my marine plywood paipo as the most directly functional interface, Sand in open flipper blister, Greenough sighting over the FLAT flexible TAIL area (There’s another picture that should be bothering you), not stingray-beavertail slapping the water no-bend carbon structure. Young fibrous bamboo, not old starchy structural bamboo, sword fights in the backyard, darn near unbreakable, cut in half on a band saw, lengthwise, lammed to the underside of the top sandwich cut the crusts off please, mom, two will do. Dominos standing up in a line, each one knocks the next closest down, Toy soldiers on the floor, swoop of my hand takes them all down. No, don’t get rid of the fins, I know those skim-boarders in Laguna Beach are incredible, but why does the fin need to be upright, soldier stance, aye aye cap’n. Ready for service? Why can’t we hide behind that bush over there then pop-up when the pressure hits the tab? Boo! OR push-up bra, inflate the underside of the breast, what do you get? Milk mustache, Pseudo cleavage. What do you see? Two bald men or a flower vase? Can I get an A-men, or not?
It doesn’t really matter what time it is anymore, does it? Swaylock’s - the 24/7 surfer-brain.
yep amen to the colapsing fin for the unencumbered glide and perhaps even the uninhibited boisterous spin ala gymnastic exuberece of youth…therin the variable yet un- accessed…stand up fin is cool has been and will be but is the real fish denied because of the absence of the colapsing auxillary fin.fins?..ambrose… What is a fish board? a place to fillet? an altar for blood sacrifice? an elusive quest for the unatainable? paul muadib morphed into the sand worm ,are we too morph to the most efficient wave riding fish/human
