Not too bad considering I had no help at all. I watched one guy glass but I was already done with the shaping, I didn’t even measure the sides or have templates. I just eyed it.
Very nice! Congrats…
Not bad for no template.
Imagine how good it would be with a template to straighten out the offcurves.
Profile is really nice.
Are you currently racing anymore?
yeah I still race. But I’m getting ready to go to college at University of central Florida so my money is kinda tight right now, ohh by the way what do you mean by offcurves??
Not trying to be critical, I still remember my first board, even tho it was in '68.
A half template flip flopped for both sides would make your peaks and valleys symetrical, and actually is easier to true than a blank, which is around 2" thick at the rails.
Then a smooth continuous curve is desireable, even if it acelerates and straightens due to shape design and preference, to achieve certain riding characteristics.
Lots of good shapers use quadratic 1/2 templates, which are usually 4 sided and about 5’ long.
I like full 1/2 image 1/16th masonite/pressboard, as it can be cleaner with more consistent curves.
NO shapers shape without a template, on a blank that is NOT exactly the shape.
Especially on your bottom pics, you can see the flat spots, extreme curves, which are not matched by the other side.
Took me about 150 races to make Expert Amateur, District 36 AMA motocross.
CMC, about 40 to make Pro.
Vet Expert, about 15 total races.
I appreciate the help, I race 125 B and have only qualified for the regional haven’t made it to Lorreta’s yet, I’m more of a semi-fast weekend warrior. I had to do a senior project which I chose to make a board and knew nothing about it 4 weeks ago…I’m just glad it floats to tell you the truth
You know what?
That board will work excellently, doing everything you need and want it to, so just use it, get good at surfing, and shape a few more, if you liked the experience.
mxracer where are you from. i live like 5 minutes from ucf and when i was in highschool i did a senior project shaping surfboards.
board looks good
Right now I’m in Jax but I’m heading down to UCF for the 2005 spring semester… I graduate in December because I have enough credits
