Hey all I just finished my first two boards. I am trying to figure out what fins I should use.
The first is an 7’11 funboard. I was thinking of going futures with a large center fin and side bites. I just don’t know exactly what i need. I was looking on fiberglass supply and i have no clue what the products are.
My second board is a 6’ fish. I was hoping to go with a twin fin setup. Again wanting to go futures but not sure what fins to get.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Josh
Talk to chipfish about keeping your options open.
That way you won’t have to make a decision until you go for a surf.
For the funboard… I like to go with a center box and FCS side plugs so you can mix and match fins and play around with it.
For the fish… if it’s retro style, I like the single foiled keel shaped fins as glass-ons, or you could go with fcs, as good fiberglass fcs compatable fins are available at Rainbow Fin Co. or True Ames.
Check the archives for placement info.
if you are going to go with a twin fin set up from futures you wanna get their keel fins…
get either their FT1 or the FSF twinny set up…
experiment with your removable fins…
i currently ride the 3/2/1s as my twinny set up and i have so much drive
and speed out of the turns that i feel that if i put in my center fin
it would hinder my surfing…
there are so many ways to take this one on man
I built a twinnie last year and put keels on it, and it was just to wiggly… I put in an extra set of plugs and ran a tiny trailer with the single foiled keels and now the thing rocks… They call that little trailer a “stabilizer” for good reason…
thanks for the suggestions guys. I am still trying to decide. How easy is the fcs plug instal? Never done one before…I think i will go with the futures and the keel fins on the fish though. Thanks
Josh
The fin gurus here have a lot more knowledge about this stuff than me, but I can say this, based on my own personal experience and preferences…
Glass-ons have excellent flex properties, maybe the best, but you can’t change them up on the spot.
Removable fin systems with boxes have better flex characteristics than those that have plugs, which are the worst.
There is a tremendous variety of FCS compatible fins out there, and you can really have fun switching them up. However, when you find what works best, you tend to stay with that set-up (for the most part).
To do the FCS thing right, you need the install kit. Trying to do it without is asking for problems, unless you can do magic with hand tools… I can’t. But I can install those plugs perfectly with the jigs and bits they give you.
Right now I’m experiementing with putting voids between the fin base and the board with FCS compatible fins, (between and behind the plugs) and I’m having fun with some of the results. You can’t do that very effectively (or easily) with glass-ons or boxes.
