I Was Wrong...

I used the wrong fin system (did/didn’t use FCS)

I sanded the board wrong (wasn’t polished)

I used the wrong resin (used Resin Research, didn’t use UV curing PE)

I used the wrong foam (didn’t use EPS, didn’t use PU, didn’t use XTR)

I made the board the wrong weight

I used the wrong rocker, rails, outline

I used the wrong fibreglass

I’ve been making surfboards for the wrong amount of years

I used the wrong spackle

I charged the wrong price

i was wrong not to airbrush my surfboard

I used the wrong glassing method

I’m tired of being wrong. To all you dickheads out there who are so fucking full of yourselves that you think you are good enough to ride a shortboard properly because Kelly Slater can ride one, do me a favour and go off yourselves. Rope is not that expensive you know and the least you can do is one decent thing for this planet.

Someone needs some cookies, warm milk, and a nap  = )!

On another note, I am downloading the movie in your Signature,

I reccomend this for a short film - its probably similar

Zietgiest movie is awesome! change the way you think about a lot of things and make you really question the media which is force fed to us.

Is a good ulternative media site with some good articles too.  You can O.D on this stuff till your blue in the face…then you go surfing and everythings O.K!

But were you surfing Noosa last week like every other person within a 1000km radius of the place who owns a surfboard, has ever owned a surfboard, or at one time or another has thought of owning a surfboard?

I have been peacefully paddling my kayak this week. In the rivers, on the ocean. Hardly another water craft within shouting distance.

What a fuggin relief not to hassle for a sparse commodity when I’m not a hassling kind of soul.

Zeitgeist is awesome. Was 9/11 an inside job? Does America really own it’s own currency and is religion just two sides to the same coin?

:peace_symbol:

I didn’t think you actually built boards…didn’t someone mention that?

Wow,  cheap rope, hanging....fuc%ing ourselves, etc, etc...sounds like some wierd sex fetish you have there ol Deano.  All you need now is a rubberball and mask...You need to come to CA and whack a few seals at the childrens pool in La Jolla!  Super fun, really good way to let off some steam.  I run in from the west with the boat and push them up on the beach, and you run from the east with the chainsaw and sledge hammer?  Ahhhh, goodtimes

But then again I might be wrong...............Hummm let me think.... nope...I'm never wrong. Bring on the 2 stroke and blood!!

Sounds like a checklist that I cover with all my customers, remember the customer is always right, even when they are wrong.

All custom boards are part negotation, part education based on the customers and your own knowledge and skills.

Not everyone is cut out order a custom board. The trick is having a realistic discussion as to expectations and outcomes before the work starts. ..... with some people it is better to direct them elsewhere. A happy customer tells 5 mates, am unhappy one tells the world!

If a customer wants  "experimental" designs or construction methods it needs to be clear that there are risks involved and as a shaper you must make this clear to them.

New customers have (generally) very little knowledge of surfboard design and construction, the make me a board so I surf like Kelly is so common, limited knowledge leads to a limited expression of their needs and wants.

The role (and future ) for custom shapers is to dig down and find out what it is that they really need at this point in their surfing life. Everyones different and so is every one of my boards!

Communication is the key!

Dean----------------I've enjoyed your posts and technical info on topics relating to surfboards and surfing.  But I can only say if you don't live here (USA) you don't have any idea what you are talking about.  You are WRONG again.

i dont have too many problems but odd board can be a drama. my attitude to people in both jewellery and boards or artwork is

no one is doing me any favours. you either like my stuff or not. i dont do other peoples designs. i have my own style. you either like my style or not. 30% non refundable deposit. if you havent got the money then we can work something out re. paying it off. as long as deposit is paid. if they dont like the board i wont make them another one ever again. if i dont like the person i wont make them anything ever . i can peg a person most of the time before they even open the mouth. body language and projected self image. i have no desire for wealth . i just want to hang out and go surfing/snowboarding for the rest of my life. so i dont need to make anything for anyone

Silly, me mate,

There’s just one big difference between you amd me. You said,

if they dont like the board i wont make them another one ever again.

If a customer didn’t like one of my boards i’d be chomping at the bit to make them another, even if I made Zero money out of it…for soo many reasons.

…You must nail em every time, and never have the displeasure of saying “I was wrong…”

Holy Fuck.!!!  .lol … That’s just???   WRONG, lmao…or just plain silly…

Yorky …

You beat me to the punch by 2 min,… Actually your responce is more tactfull / civil, mine was just a “knee jerk” response…

BTW. I really like that E-winged bonzer board you built, it’s fun going on the “out of bounds” runs now and again…

I’m doing an e winged kite - twinzer as we speak… I found that a rabiting router bit cuts the perfect profile indent for the e.wing.

My boards have a core-cell bottom skin that the bearing on the rabbiting router bit can follow… All you’d really need is a tapering router jig to allow you to cut the e-wings  vertical taper quickly and accurately…

Cheers Kiterider, All the best with your project.

…you know what, as you said, “its just plain Silly” and thats that. ha ha.

no its not silly. its intelligent.

i didnt say if a customer felt there could be improvements to suit his style of surfing . sure his next one id make changes. thats why i have an easy time. and people buy boards off me

if i made a board and a guy just come back and said i dont like this board

to fcking bad piss off

if i design it and he oks it, then deal is done. anyway this situation is easy to avoid by saying no to the guy in the first place. no thanks. i make the same money doing dings without the bill for materials at the end of the month. i can spot a picky customer a mile away and i know when they are wasting my time. some people are never happy

intelligent business . reduce overheads and increase cashflow

for example if i was really vindictive i could send all my nightmare customers to yorky and watch him loose money

i been making top tier jewellery for over 20 years. im one of the best in the business.i was born in a workshop. my moms a jeweller my dads a jeweller and 2 of my uncles are jewellers. one of them heads up a college department because hes the best.

IM personally not interested in the business cuz i dont do deals with crooks and pricks. seems there is a lot of crooks and pricks in jewellery. i have personal standards and ethics…  making money doesnt change my ethics. hence i dont make jewellery unless the customers like what i do and accepts that what they will get is a paul cannon design. not a fcking cheap copy of some other twats work. id rather be poor. i dont need much money anyway. all my stuff i make myself. i fix my car and my other shit. even basic electronics. i build my own stuff. i dont drink or take drugs so i dont need money for that. i dont eat meat.i get my cloths from op shops. i dont have and never will be dumb enough to get a mortgage and have to work for the rest of my life. no thanks i dont want to get unfit and fat and depressed

m going surfing and snowboarding all winter. already got my season pass. gunna do it till im incapable

aah no ill just get a 9 to 5 and my wife can get a 9 to 5 so we never see the kids. and a few years before i die of cancer i can get a longboard to float my fat beerbloated gut and a shiny new SUV so i can sneak away and be pathetic in the lineup and talk about the glory days that never happened. whislt my wife is rooting the neighbours gardener

kiterider . why should i do anything for someone i dont like?

i dont waste time with people i dont like. when i make something with my hands there is a little piece of me in that . i would rather give it to someone who appreciates it then sell it to someone who doesnt
