Yes, there sure would… people would put dimples on them and call them golf balls…
Mine would go faster, float better and turn when I felt like it…
I’d chamber the ball to make it lighter and put 4 layers of CF for strength and use epoxy…cause it’s the best…
Maybe even build a Hollow Wooden Bowling Ball out of Jarrah…
No bugger it, I’d flatten the ball out and call it a frisbee…then throw it at the pins… but the pins would have to be light so that it falls over easier…
Now let’s not talk about the lane construction, that would have to be a new thread…(-;
But I’d have little air holes blowing…blah blah blah…
With all the Suits jumping into this industry, the offshoring of manufacturing to the third world, the advent of surf parks at strip malls and surfboards being sold at big box sporting goods stores, aren’t they already?
Just watch “The Big Lebowski” and you will know the True Believeres will be allright…
Swayballs!!
My brother and I used to tell my parents that we were going bowling every friday night, I still don’t know how to play. I’m sure it is almost as fun as surfing.
We need to set up a shaping league to get out of the house and make more boards. And don’t for get the team uniforms.

Maybe an accidental reference, but it reminds me of a discovery channel show recently. Back in WWI (maybe WWII) a guy was developing a bomb that could be dropped from a plane and skip across the water. The design he came up with was to use a round outline with dimples, just like a golf ball! Only this configuration caused the bomb to skip across the water. Chip, want to try putting dimples on your next board?? Let us know how it goes.

Still don’t like your Piccie…

"Hi everyone, I checked the archives but couldn’t find the info I was looking for,
I just went ahead and shaped my own bowling ball out of plastic cutting boards
I got from Home Depot. When I got to the alley, all the guys with their Nigerian-
built imports had a chuckle. Then I bowled my best game ever, I am so stoked!"
I just bought one of these chinese bowls of the homepage I tried them yesterday they work great but are slower (radar measurement)than these campbell bowls.iLL send you the speed details measurement later
Man, you really shouldn’t have started that thread. I have been a local bowling champion for the past few years although I slowly drifted out of it lately (fun for sure, but also expensive as hell when you start playing “seriously”. Like training almost every night and having contests on almost every week-end…
BUT, there is more common points than you would think with surfing and, to some degree, with board design. As a matter of fact, almost everything lies in body memory of moves and pre-visualisation of moves, just like in surfing. It comes to a point where you could play with your eyes closed and still hit a strike. As for board design, maybe you know and maybe you don’t, but the lanes are oiled carefully between games and they are oiled in a degressive manner: lots of oil in lane’s entry, less oil in the middle, no oil in the last part of it. This allows balls to be thrown with some spin effect: the ball travels very easily and fast on the first part of the lane, then it’s slowed down and it finally “breaks” into a sharp turn when hitting the “dry” zone. This allows the ball to hit the pins at a very important angle from the side thus insuring an almost certain strike if it hits in the right place (between pin 1 and pin 3 if you’re right-handed, between pin 1 and pin 2 if you’re left-handed). Which brings me to my point: people like me who play with lots of speed in their balls have a harder time getting the ball to break in the end of its trajectory. One of the possible help (besides trying to play “softer” is to use a sanded finish ball rather than a mirror-polished one. Polished balls go even faster, sanded balls tend to be a bit slower but they also “grip” to the lane better. Sounds familiar?
Come on, let’s start one more of those great “polished boards are faster/sanded boards are not” thread!!!
"I made another ball, this time it’s hollow, can’t wait to try it if the
lanes are clean! I should take a photo, if I could only post it.
I know Chip would like to see a piccie of my balls."
(jk! actually bowlling is pretty cool, lots of body awareness, just
like archery, or martial arts. Funny how we get to new levels
in the things that interest us, they almost own us at times!)
if surfboards were like bowling balls…i’d have a lot less fun at the beach.
i mean, c’mon, they don’t even float!
plus one,
Please do not post a piccie of your balls. Mike
Does Jack’s have 10 lbs balls ?
If yes ? Don’t you think it would be a little hard for Jack to walk ?
Balsa, thanks for that info about the oiled lanes. It actually answered a question I’ve have for years and years since a kid and never thought to even ask. Question was how is it that the ball has ferocious spin and still goes straight for such a long distance then suddenly breaks into a curve. Always just assumed that it was a function of how fast/hard you rolled it.
Ahhhhhh, getting a long held question answered is just like getting an itch scratched in a spot you couldn’t reach. Thanks again. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh little to the right…that’s it…
