If you could build the perfect shaping room........

Next week I am helping build out 4 shaping rooms

I know there are several threads on rooms on swaylocks

What are some of the best ideas you have seen that you would incorporate into a room if you had your way.

I already have the basics covered.

Good size, adjustable racks, dust collection.

so im looking at some of the WOW thats a great idea things you have seen or wouldnt mind sharing

Let see, kegerator, huge flat screen, couches, and Thai masseuses in the leisure room for starters. And since you placed no limitations on this exercise, I am also going to go with a whole crew of Oompa-Loompas to do all of the shaping and glassing.

One thing i've always wanted was a grill in the toe kick of a cabinet that is hooked up to the vac system. When sweeping up, all you do is sweep the pile to the grate and flip on the system and there it goes into the collection barrel. Also rubber matted floors.

I'd also copy the "swing arm system" posted a week or so ago by jcyoungquist.

well,

after having built 3 for myself [aspiring backyarder]

I say this is nice apart from the other mostly obvious stuff...

  1. Make the back wall wide about 9 feet, flat and one color ==> you can use it to lay the shape on racks, and check the rocker out from a good distance across the room.
  2. Keep the area between the shaping racks free, so you can pick the board up, turn it around whilst you walk to the other side, or when storing...
  3. Adjustability on about everything, lights, stands, racks electricty, dust collection etc etc

This is where i stop before ranting on about what i like.

This is mine now [not a lot of space]

It would be in the corner of my massive dream shed full on the best tools for woodworking, and making things that help me make better technologically advanced surfboards

A wood floor is easier on the legs. If you have a concrete slab just lay down some treated 2x4’s on 16" centers. Attach to slab with concrete nails. Then lay over some tongue and groove 3/4" plywood sheets (not MDF board). Attach with drywall screws. Sand the floors and put a coat a couple of coats of polyurethane. Makes for an easier work day. Tongue and groove 1x6 lumber is even better than ply if you can find it at a reasonable price. I also like ten foot ceilings.

I've done (from scratch) about six of them in my lifetime;  They were all perfect for their time.  I walk into the one I use occassionally now at Aloha Glass and it's perfect as well.

Thanks for the cooments so far here is what we have

 8 x14 the heights are 16 foot

we have a rubber underlayment we may put in but not wood floors.

the underlayment is a heavily traffic resistent 1 inch roll rubber

I may incorporate the dust swing arm

may do the flooor dust collection as well im waiting to get a smaple of the underlayment to see how well foam dust sweeps off

2 black rooms 2 blue by personal requests of the occupants… Those green walls are cool though.

Im also thinking of installing can fans above the shaping racks to keep the guys cool and to blow dust down and away, but it may stir the dust which is not cool.

The doors are side entry pocket doors and one end of the room has a shelf at 6 foot to store unshaped blanks

ive just installed remote control lighting the remote is on my planer dont need to put it down, to switch between either three light’s, to check the difference! work’s 20 meter’s away.

also extra button for extractor/fan, etc

looking in too smd led, tube’s brighter, no noise, no heat, longer lasting, different white’s, !

also solar powered vent in wall that continualy vent’s the bay in sun time!

overhead dust extraction, run the power cable inside the hose for neat ness!, with quick release for hose and cable can attach the sander, router, etc

my extractor hose can reach the whole floor, to vac, as i can remove planer! have thought about the idea of sweeping all in to one corner, toward’s a big vac head! The vac is in the next room so no noise.

In the old days we had these units called “Groms”. A good grom who was craving a board could be forced to sweep the shop…get food and beverages and even wash your Van. They ran on pure stoke and had a very small carbon footprint. If I were to have the perfect shaping room I would be sure to include at least one of these Units.

sounds like you are pumping out boards, show us some! and pics of the room, sounds great...

ciao

I’ve already built it. 9’x16’x16’ works for me.  AC unit and an exaust fan to keep the air moving. Sound board to kill the echo (providing you still use the archaic planer like me!) It also helps to insulate the temps. It comes primed white or natural tan color which I have left. I’ve tried every color there is for contrast. Also a killer sound system is a must! A vaccum system for your planer keeps it clean. Barry

what is that above 8 foot 6 mil painters plastic?

Howzit Mr.Clean, After you get the wood floor down lay down some carpet with padding under it, Might as well be comfortable on your feet.Another good thing is you can work in your bare feet and just shop vac it andmake sure it isn't shag but a nice short nap carpet. Aloha,Kokua

Intriguing rocker stick you have Barry. Please jump on this thread and tell us all about it!

Hey Kokua my old friend. Funny thing is I am building a new shaping room as we speak. I am doing it for fun and helping to pass on some of the knowledge to a group of younger guys.  I used to shape barefoot and had the carpeted floor. I may do that on this one. I have built probably 10 shaping rooms and this one is going to be comfortable and big . Getting ready to install an A/C and dust collector. It will be outside the room to eliminate noise. I am lucky in the fact that I have 5 thousand sq. ft building to play in. I use 2000 feet to store furniture I have restored.

I thought I had retired from board building but the addiction keeps coming back. It is like a shot of adrenalin. The best thing about this is I am not trying to earn a living from it and can build what I want. Ever seen a board with 200 resin pinlines?

Hey Barry!  Nice add in Transworld recently in the board forum.  Boards looked very good.  Your in the thick of it there in O'town so hope you're doing well.  Still want to buy a couple of rocker sticks but have had some financail setbacks latly.

If you want to know about Barry's rocker sticks:  why don'y you "jump on it" and buy one from him.  He builds them and sells them.  Why?  Did you think he would give you the plans and details so you could copy it?  Ha!

that is a nice looking rocker stick. has just helped me realise how to make one from a length of aluminium bar and some cheap adjustable bevel arms.

cheers

I’ll check his site. I wasn’t aware that he sold them. And no, I wouldn’t expect that he would give me the plans under those circumstances.
