if you had your very own surf shop.....

hey everyone, out of curiosity… if you had your own surf shop: boards, clothing, knick knacks, anything you want…what would you do/stock to make it successful and why? thanks -steve

hey everyone,>>> out of curiosity… if you had your own surf shop: boards, clothing, knick > knacks, anything you want…what would you do/stock to make it > successful and why?>>> thanks>>> -steve That is a really good question Steve.I would like to have a shop kind of like “Abercrombie and Fitch”,selling nothing but handmade limited production boards.I would cater to all of the small builders that build boards as an art form and a labor of love, included would be hand made clothes, resin tables, classic used boards and surf nostalgia.Lots of barnboard and green plants for the decor and a super casual atmosphere.Man I could go on and on about this but you get the idea.I am pretty sure that it would be a financial bust but I like dreaming.

Thumbs up, clean lines! Someday, when “handcrafted originals” become a nearly extinct commodity, a growing, unfulfilled hunger for The Real Thing will drive many people to climb all over each other just to get into a surf shop like that… Dale

If I had my very own surf shop, I 'll starve to death~~~~~… Its not kidding since not much people surfing in Hong Kong. Income of the surf shops here mainly from selling fashion of Roxy, Quiksilver, Rip Curl and Billabond etc… Regards, Crabie

Last November, one of the older shop’s (appox.25 yrs.) went out of business. They were more of a hard core surf shop. There major competitor, in business appox. (15 years), who many call a “boutique”, not a surf shop, financially, has been very successful. Personally I alway’s traded at the old shop. I like the idea that “clean lines” has for a shop.

hey everyone,>>> out of curiosity… if you had your own surf shop: boards, clothing, knick > knacks, anything you want…what would you do/stock to make it > successful and why? I’d have Magic man’s fishes McCoys nuggets Jim Phillips, Bruce Jones and Gene Coopers longboards Bruce Jones and Gene Coopers eggs and comets Dale’s surfmats For those customers that know a good surfboard when they see one. A fat penguin for display A shitload of cheapass minimals/hybrids from bic or china made for selling to the beginners. A shitload of thrusters with ripcurl and quiksilver stickers for selling to those guys don’t surf but like to have board on the roof of their dad’s BMW. Loads and loads of good wetsuits at resonable prices. A shitload of the hippest of hip clothing from the hippest of hip brands to pay rent. regards, Håvard

Clothes, Clothes, Clothes and Rentals. You are selling a life style. A fair selection of boards. There is little money in boards. Very few actually surf. Sorry to break the bubble. This is from talk to surf shop owners. Successful surf shop? You must be kidding.>>> hey everyone,>>> out of curiosity… if you had your own surf shop: boards, clothing, knick > knacks, anything you want…what would you do/stock to make it > successful and why?>>> thanks>>> -steve

I beg your pardon for sounding cynical in the previous response. What do you mean by successful? Spence>>> hey everyone,>>> out of curiosity… if you had your own surf shop: boards, clothing, knick > knacks, anything you want…what would you do/stock to make it > successful and why?>>> thanks>>> -steve

I beg your pardon for sounding cynical in the previous response. What do > you mean by successful?>>> Spence one that allows your top two customers to get free boards and custom, hand made fins at cost!!!

There would be a comfortable sofa along with Griffin and Severson originals on the walls.

At least a zero balance, no deficit is a basic. Plus time to surf, chat w/ clients, renovations…etc. Most of all, to survive is to make profit. Regards, Crabie

No problem. Labor COSTS $65.00 per hour. Phone consultations? They’re extra.>>> one that allows your top two customers to get free boards and custom, hand > made fins at cost!!!

I would just go work in cleanlines shop. He’d probably fire me for calling in sick every time a well hit. I wouldn’t care as long as he would still let me come by the factory now and then , hang out and ask dumb questions.

hey everyone,>>> out of curiosity… if you had your own surf shop: boards, clothing, knick > knacks, anything you want…what would you do/stock to make it > successful and why?>>> thanks>>> -steve I.d get pitchers of beer for free daily at the 49er tavern, go around back for a smoke, set up an amplifier and get my guitar out and jam all day, set up a couch for locals to chill on after sessions, sponsor riders that never had a chance, sell the best selection of boards stingers, thrusters, quads logs, guns, wing pins with tunnel tails, fishs, advanced fish boards with wings, tunnel tails, beveled rails step deck bottoms, and make anything else that was desired by any person that walked in …oh wait aminute I did do this…my bad

This is from talk to surf shop > owners.>>> Anthony The rest of the guys can do what they want - I’d sell soft boards and chick tank tops and bikinis. It still might be “selling a lifestyle”, but I’m not sure which lifestyle… On a more serious note - whatever I’d stock, all ages, experiences, and abilities would be welcome. I’ll never understand watching grandparents leaving a surf shop empty-handed during the Christmas season, yet I’ve seen it year after year. Nels

Yea, you stupid ass!1\ My dad went off when he finally read your dope. He told my mom how cute you thought you are with your wasted history. What a guy? The kids up the street say — Maybe a trans? No wonder?? you never, can tell. have fun!!!
