…and yes, if you can stop looking at the flatness long enough to notice the 2 guys on the beach, it does appear that BOTH of them are wearing FULL WETSUITS. for those who haven’t been to South Florida in the dead of winter, our water temps are a frigid 77 degrees, with a current air temp of 74. although, after you factor in the windchill from the brisk SW breeze at 1.1 mph, with gusts up to 2 mph, i suppose all that rubber may be necessary to cut the chill.
I wear a fully wetty, along with everyone else on this coast and were about directly across the state… i think the gulf is 59 degrees right now… dont know how you guys get it so warm?> 77 degrees?
if only they had my blue and yellow fluoro wetty on , or a bright red one with matching helmets !
…maybe “rubberlove” or “overboard” , the seamstress, need to talk to them !
ben
by the way , thanks for the shot …all of a sudden , our summer waves here at scarborough don’t look so small after all ! [I had a three hour surf in chest high waves a coupla days ago …
bob - gulfstream runs real close from miami through palm beach…keeps the water warm and toasty all the time. in the summer, it gets so warm it melts the wax right off my board.
plus1 - those guys out in texas really know how to ride boat wake…unfortunately, us floridians have a lot to learn.
chip - we had a real fun swell runnin’ yesterday, but she didn’t last long. pretty much crapped out by early afternoon, but here’s a shot from the dawn patrol…
and one of my buddies has a neon wetsuit…it’s orange and pink!..totally 80s style…and yes, he wears it with pride.
llilibel - the number of people riding 6’2" potato chip thrusters around here is sickening! and then they all complain about me and my crew “taking every wave”. you’d think people would get a clue?!!
rider - who was it, mickey munoz?, who said “there are no bad waves…just the wrong attitude and a poor choice of equipment”. he obviously never saw THAT!
adam - long range forecast does NOT look favorable. might get a little something between delray and palm beach late thursday / early friday …but even that is questionable. i’m keepin’ my fingers crossed, cuz all i see on the horizon is flatness. eh…at least we’ll have plenty of time to shape!
bob - because the water never gets cold, people with any sense just wear the rubber to keep the air off 'em. when the water is mid-70s, and the air at dawn the day after the cold front passes (guaranteed good surf!) is low 40s, it’s nice to have a layer for warmth. i wear a farmer john suit…long legs, no sleeves. as a longboarder, it keeps the chill off me when i’m paddling…sleeveless so it won’t restrict the paddling motion, and with my arms in the water, i’m all warm and toasty. the shorty-boarders tend to go the opposite route…short legs, long sleeves. and then there’s always some people out with spring suits or fulls. but it’s really only needed when the air is cold…and even then, you can get by without it…it’s just about where you draw the line between the discomfort of wearing a wetsuit being less than the that of cold air on your nips.
plus1 - the closest nude beach is an hour south. good surf, too!
Full suits in 77 degress, your winter is hotter than our summer. I wear that get up now and it can’t be much over 36 degrees here, ok so I cant actually feel my feet after about 30 mins but those guys but be roasting.
The massive WNW(275-290) swell continues this morning under a temporary settling ocean, but still maxed-out with very few spots ridable. A slow wind down should be expected through Friday. Deep water swell is near 12-15ft, for double/triple O’head waves for exposures, while standouts are MUCH BIGGER.
