im a beginner maker and i need some questions answered

What type of container should i use when i pour in the catalyst and resin?

Do i have to do the top and the rails before the glass hardens or can i do the top and then the rails later?

What type of gloves do i use? Dish washing gloves?

And the ratio is 10 drops of catalyst for 1 ounce of resin?

How do i clean my brush after its dipped in the resin?

Is  there a link that can tell me everything to know about glasssing?

thanks

I think this site will pretty much answer all your questions.

I wouldn’t steer a novice to that site. I find his ideas on design to be as off-the-wall as those of a certain NZ resident who wears an orange wetsuit. He may be good at explaining glassing techniques, but it’s not good for a noob to get his head filled with weirdness.

playtex gloves work.

old plastic bottles for fruit jucies, like cranberry etc. work, just cut the top off and walla…a resin bucket.

also , popcorn buckets work killer, but make sure you get all the oils washed off.

for smaller jobs, use non-waxed dixie cups or any plastic fruit/yogurt/pudding cups.

acetone to wash brushes out with if you use polyester resin, but i just buy brushes at big lots or 99centsonly stores…use them once and throw them away.

you can archive anything you need here.

Hi Sammy -

"If about 80% of the surfboard industry is evenly divided into two severely different camps, yet is almost totally comprised of clones within each camp, it seems there must be room for some other design."

"Do not read every thing possible about surfboard building on Swaylocks."

I snipped these quotes from Steve's site.  They both make sense to me.  I always liked the design ideas he offers.  He tells people to TRY everything they can and focus on something they like, NOT what the pros ride.  (makes sense?)

I also appreciate his approach to small wave board design which he discusses under the chapter "Misconceptions."  Out of the box?  Yes, but totally valid IMO.

The fact that he, like Mike Paler, does it all for free is huge.

I clicked that link, then again, then started to read…

I’m with Sammy - There must be a simpler site about how to glass, with out all the “opinion”   - “use nothing less than 6oz cloth”   What??  I do, but I wouldn’t say anyone has to…

Good luck man - Herb’s steering ya right.

Like the old saying goes…

You get what you pay for.

Under "Misconceptions’ on the aforementioned site:

First, there’s that nonsequitur part about men o’ war in the middle of a discussion of designs. WTF?

But, his ideas on optimum board specs for small waves are really off the wall. For a 170 lb surfer, he suggests these dimensions on an 8’0"

L 8’

W 25.5    (???)

Nose  20"

Tail  20-3/4"  (???)

Swallowtail  @ 14" tip to tip

Thickness 3-1/2"

I don’t even have to draw that out to know it would look like a cartoon version of a surfboard.  I think he drinks the same Koolaid as R Stewart.

Regardless of the knocks on the guys site, it helped me (noob) quite a bit on my board build, granted that was not the only resource I used, I bought videos and surfed the hell out of this site.

Hi Sammy -

Those sound like a fish directly proportioned up to float like a longboard.  Makes sense to me.

Then again I'm just finishing a second 11 foot custom order that is 27 1/2" wide and 5" thick.  It is not a SUP.

I don't drink anybody's Kool-Aid and I don't hesitate to try different dimensions.  If I try it and like it, I can forget all about a bunch of confining numbers.  I find some of the currently fashionable dimension parameters to be laughable.

By the way... picking on Roy when he can't respond just aint right in my opinion.

i've been to the website mentioned above. liked it, even printed it out to read later.

i think SurferSteve's target audience is beginning surfers... people building their first surfboards.

not like the first one they've built after having surfed for decades but, their first surfboard. ever.

anyways, that was long before i discovered Swaylocks. i haven't been back since. every possible

angle is expressed here on Sways also. going through the archives you kinda hafta pick

and choose what you listen to as sometimes, experienced opinions contradict eachother.

i think that's a manifestation of "it all works".

Summon,

For glassing get the master glasser video.  You can find it a foamez or maybe greenlight.

Summon,

Don’t be offended but, from your questions, you don’t sound ready to glass…

In addition to the answers given, you should try to find someone near you who would be willing to show you some of what’s involved. Put out where you live and someone here might well step up to offer some help.

Now - this is important - Besides just glassing there are also a number of safety issues that should always be taken into account. Be sure you are aware of them before risking life, limb and property.

Read, study, watch vids and others, get ALL your shit together - don’t rush things until then.

Pete

yeah the surfersteve site is okay for your first build, but it lacks a bunch of information that you need to know. i would use mixing buckets from home depot. use a 1/100 catalyst to resin ratio (in the lam coat) maybe a litttle more in the hot coat. and definitely wrap your rails when glassing the bottom. best instruction on learning how to glass boards is probably youtube videos.

By the way… picking on Roy when he can’t respond just aint right in my opinion.

Sorry John - I did it on another thread…  One of those issues I haven’t let go of.

As for this thread - No one can suggest any better sites???  Bummer.

My “bragging” - I glassed my first few from a pamphlet from the hardware store, circa '79-'80.  Thankfully it had lots of good photos, and I’m more of visual learner.

I would HIGHLY recommend getting the shaping 101 and glassing 101 videos from JC.  There is so much information in those videos and subtle tips and tricks that you just can’t get reading forums.  I got mine from a local place that I linked above but you can probably just google the videos and find a distributor.

Howzit burn, Take it from some one who has been around the block a lot of times, the JC vids leave out way to much and the best vids are the master series. I had a good laugh when a friend showed me the JC glassing video, best part of the video was the glassing rack.Aloha,Kokua

I’ll check it out.  Just wish it wasn’t $60 :-/  I agree there was a lot that was left out of the glassing video, I felt like it was rushed but I hadn’t seen the master glasser series.  I watched it after making a couple boards and it was helpful but not as much as the shaping video.

a please would be nice...

What type of container should i use when i pour in the catalyst and resin? anything that will hold the resin without melting or contaminating it really

Do i have to do the top and the rails before the glass hardens or can i do the top and then the rails later? you can do the top then the rails, but its easier, better, and more of a mess (therefore more fun) to do them at the same time...if youre worried about the mess a plastic sheet or tarp will do the trick

What type of gloves do i use? Dish washing gloves? use latex gloves from medical supply or cooking supply aisles at the dollar store...dishwashing gloves will work but they are kind of bulky and clumsy

And the ratio is 10 drops of catalyst for 1 ounce of resin?  depends on your system...follow the directions for the resin system you buy...dont eyeball your measurements use measuring cups or even better scales to get your ratios right

How do i clean my brush after its dipped in the resin? pick up some cheap dollar store brushes and throw them away...acetone and other cleaners cost a lot more than the brushes you will need

Is  there a link that can tell me everything to know about glasssing?  no...except for here that is

I agree and would not recommend doing the top and then the rails.  You should be working the resin out to the rails from the center making it’s way to the rails.  You want to have the rails fully saturated with resin (the cloth will be clear at this point and look like glass) and then wrap the rails.  I have never heard of anyone not doing the rails at this point and it would probably be almost impossible.

This should give you a decent idea of what the lam process looks like:

This should give you an example of the hotcoat process:
