Epoxy vs poly. Grown (I think) men about to throttle each other over their choice of laminating sauce. Duke/Uconn or Redick/Morrison now THAT’S worth fighting over…
cleanlines said it a while back, that there just isn’t that much left to talk about. So, we end up picking on Chip, who everyone really loves anyway, or banter about surftech, or epoxy, or Gordon Clark…I know what you mean Lee. I thought it was funny that someone said epoxy took a hit, or setback because Hawaii’s got PUfoam again. Silly.
I’m over it .
Epoxy vs poly. Grown (I think) men about to throttle each other over their choice of laminating sauce…
"I’m over it "
…me too !
I mean , REALLY , who gives a shit ? …Arguing over resin ?? Geez, give it a break !!
It’s not like we are effecting world peace or solving world hunger or stopping wars [in fact , it seems people posting about resin seems to start wars on the ‘surf design’ forums I have looked at. ]
Surfing …
…a wave , a person , a waveriding vehicle …simple , healthy , and [guys, it’s SUPPOSED to be ] …FUN !!
Does our homemade board actually work in / for our waves ?
And, are we having fun yet ?
…much more important questions to me .
just my Aussie .05

"cleanlines said it a while back, that there just isn’t that much left to talk about. "
I HOPE there is !
I HOPE people will always post shots of their boards and fins here , and report on what they have found the various design aspects of them do . As well as new processes , of course !
Carl’s recent photo post on a spoon ? …FASCINATING , and INSPIRING …well, to me , at least !
…keep them coming !
“So, we end up picking on Chip” …
hey , I’m an easy target !! He who posts the most provides the most cannon fodder [and , ‘Stubs’ giving me crap really doesn’t worry me !]
‘Stubs’ and I are really just a couple of boofheads who really don’t know squat about most things …a bit like Roy and HG [google search]
…"who everyone really loves anyway "
wow…really ??? [I could understand if most people HATED me ! … but thanks , Epac , for the compliment!]
actually , I was really surprised [and I guess a bit flattered / puzzled ?] that people “stuck up for me” , as I thought what young Cecil had to say was quite valid , and actually confirmed what I had been thinking lately anyway , regarding my boards , and what to make next .
furthermore …
…I’d just like to take this opportunity to say
"thanks , Mike Paler / ‘Swaylock’, for the wonderful choice of colours available to us on this forum …
it keeps me preferring ‘Swaylocks’ over ANY other forum out there …you are the leader in the field !"
cheers mate !
ben
Chip’s latest thing… besides bold, italic, underline and CAPS, he gets into the colours
hehe theres just not enough ways to express his stoke on swaylocks…
juz chipping at ya chippa!
A
my vote : who cares? if it floats, turns, and makes you smile, it could be made of tissue paper for all i care.
its the stoke that matters most.
*i won’t defend, or assault surftech, boardworks, etc., mostly because they are supplying a demand. i will say that as a whole we as surfers are cheap bastards, who will nickle and dime an already skinny margin into nothingness. and, this includes myself of course…unfortunately.
as a recent e/e experimenter, it is great stuff. so is poly. they are different. like chalk and cheese. i think to compare them is silly, and has been beaten to death here, there, everywhere.
now, where is that hollow concrete, carbon stranded, jet fueled, 5 wing, 7 fin, dimple channeled long board thread again?
I for one wish someone here would figure out how make a regular high perfomance board not an Olo, Alai’ia or Roy special and blue surflifes or shredders without one ounce of resin or cloth like Chris Garrett claims to be doing and tell us how it’s done.
PU glue and EPS/XPS foam is fine just no resin no cloth no 2pac no CA glue.
I would love to know how to do that one.
That would end the resin wars at least for me for sure…
What tone was that hot pink lavz ?
I might start a few threads in that eh ?
just to keep you and ‘deep purple’ Hicksy happy … [check out grant’s 1970s funky purple car seat covers , eh ? beautiful …not to mention the “glow in the dark stars” on the ceiling of the kombi ne harvester …a nice touch !]

“I mean , REALLY , who gives a shit ?”
Answer: plenty of us.
Most of the things we do in our lives don’t have anything to do with effecting peace on a global scale. So what? That doesn’t mean they aren’t just as important on a personal level… after all, that’s where world peace begins.
Yes, riding waves can be enjoyed as nothing more than a simple activity. But to others, there’s much more to surfing than that… many people take surfing very seriously. Without that mindset few things of value in this life would ever have been developed and brought to completion… through inspiration, much planning and dedication, creativity, many failures, persistance and intense, hard work. Sure… a high degree of involvement definitely isn’t for everyone. But for others, intensity is part of the fun!
Thanks to certain individuals, there are all kinds of things we simply wouldn’t have in surfing (or life) if a lot people weren’t passionate and dedicated enough to achieve the necessary skills and knowledge, working as hard as humanly possible, experimenting, taking risks… to develop products like polyurethane surfboard blanks, polyester and epoxy resins, fiberglass and exotic laminates, removeable fins and their systems, neoprene wetsuits, etc. Not to mention electricity, plastics, the internet, our computers… and Swaylocks!
The fun we have in surfing has always been created at a cost… that is, unless you bodysurf au natural sans swim fins!
“I’m over it… epoxy vs poly” ???
Hey, they’re just two more tools in a stoked craftsman’s
bag of tricks! Learn to use whatever is best for a specific situation.
Friendly debate is good, creating is much better!
"Friendly debate is good, creating is much better! "
…and surfing is so much better than both !
…if you argue with a wave , guess what happens ?

endless arguments over trivial bullshit take all the fun out of surf design forums
Seem my posts in the “RR Epoch-see Sucks thread”. Same sentiment, basically. I like them both, and hate them both. But really, I LOVE them both.
I for one wish someone here would figure out how make a regular high perfomance board not an Olo, Alai’ia or Roy special and blue surflifes or shredders without one ounce of resin or cloth like Chris Garrett claims to be doing and tell us how it’s done.
‘High performance’ surely means that the board gets close to the performance goals for that particular design. . . . . my ‘Roy specials’ are in my experience, very ‘high performance’ because they go fast, and far, with good control and adequate maneuverabilty, and in most conditions they outperform all the ‘regular’ ‘performance boards’ in the lineup. This ‘high performance equals lightweight tricksurfing board’ stuff is nonsense, there are many performance standards which can be applied to surfing vehicles other than the ability to do trick turns.
Olo boards ARE, or can be, very high performance, just in a slightly different realm
If you ever get around to building a Thrusterbuster 10-9 tunnel board, a D11-9 or an X-15 and then actually ride one then you will discover the truth in what I am saying.
I don’t want to ram this stuff down your throats anymore, but it has to be said occasionally And at least I am not arguing about resin!
yeah if you take alook at roys video
youll neva see him stuck behind a section
his boards go hell fast
albiet in a fairly straight line trim;)
still if ya into long boards and ya want speed
id love to have go roy!
I hear Tom Wegener has a new range of boards out, no laminate, just wood which needs to be oiled. Now thats environmentall friendly ! Does anyone know anything about them ?
Hey Roy…I really like your approach to surfboard manufacture and design and am always stimulated by your arguments…
I guess “Hi performance” is a value laden term which means different things to different people… to the majority however, high performance is how pros surf shortboards…as a shortboarder I aspire to be able to turn hard and critically… if that’s your criteria then olo’s are not the way…
I guess Roy’s criteria are ease of wave catching, length of ride and speed in a straight line…I see the attraction more and more as I get older!
“I’m over it… epoxy vs poly” ???
Friendly debate is good, creating is much better!
Yes!
What we need is new fresh debate topics…
How’bout the,
I’m over it
vs.
I’m not over it
debate?
ok, DISCUSS…
mass debaters…plenty here !
UConn all the way
mass debaters…plenty here !
isn’t that a cause of blindness and male pattern baldness???
