In Praise of Red X

just had to say i recently got back my latest board from the glasser, a 6’9" roundpin, and was a bit disappointed by how it felt during the first few sessions. it just felt kinda stiff and i couldn’t seem to find the sweet spot. this is the first board i have used the red x system so i moved the whole cluster from the center of the boxes forward to the front, about 3/8th’s or so. today i surfed it and it was like a totally different board. it felt loose and fast and responded predictably(something i wasn’t feeling before). i am pretty amazed at the difference and so stoked i didn’t use fcs. red x may not be perfect but it’s certainly a step forward. on other boards i’ve changed fins around, used baby trailers, etc, and they defintely changed the flavor of the board but not nearly so dramatically…thank you red x. and to think i haven’t even installed the superchargers i got from herb yet. (thanks herb!)

Yup, fin placement is VERY important, along with tow in can be the difference between a good and a bad board. I wish there was a system that combined these two elements and had a nice selection of fin templates.

…Yeah,they’re killer!Herb

just glued on the sc’s too. herb i used loctite 5 min epoxy, after a full 24 hrs of curing will that stuff take a little sanding just to make everything pretty? i also noticed the chargers had no cant so i gave the base a little sand to match the cant on my side fins. if i recall that’s the idea yeah?

Bruce, …The glue-on chargers should have 4 degrees of cant built into them, but sometimes the board you put them on has a bit of a cupped concave that’s unnoticable. That is until you do something like this.Sometimes I don’t clean/hone enough of the edging off the charger and this will negate the cant as well. …Yes,a netural/bias line, set at whatever your fins are set at is a good place(to start anyway)and is what I suggest for most people using them for the first time.Herb

yesterday was great!boosted 3 or 4 airs,2 of which were good high ones and landed them like a pro.got all kinds of waves. …Today, paddled out ,and on my first wave ,like eyeball high, launched a good booster.I thought is was going to be a day like yesterday, but I could have packed it up after my first wave,it got really slow and backed off too much. …Nice to be able to complain about the little things in life for a change.Herb

i cleaned em up today and they look great. i’m gonna go out and shoot a pic or two and throw it on the board page. the board does have some concave so that was probably it. thanks again!
