influences

what if you saw a bunch of shocking hot pics in your fav mag of big name surfers riding a totally new type stick and fins. does it all and undingeable too. the mags all have design performance articles discussing this idea is the newest best, so rad that contests are even won on them. would you be influenced to try and buy? or not. personal- i`ve been having seriously doubts about surf mags. i used to snicker at the old guys who would read tsj but not anymore.

I would probably give the article a once over, see if there were any merits to the design and maybe incorporate it into future shapes. Something like this kind of happened to me in the early 90’s when bonzer bottoms where starting to be used again by a lot of the top shapers. I did my own version of it and that board ended being one of the best I’ve ever had.

In the late eighties and early nineties, when Kelly, Todd Holland and the other top 16 guys started riding boards that were under 2-1/4" thick, My personal though was “there is no way these boards float as well as a thicker board”, but after careful concideration, I realized that all the foam that is above water is only being supported by the foam beneath the water. You have to keep an open mind as things do change and often against the grain to which we have been accustomed

dude i havent written in here before but there is no way those boards float as well as a thicker board. even kooks knows that. If you would just make two identical shape boards except make one thicker and one thinner. Then youd know it for yourself. p.s. I dont give a stinkin rotting rats ass about the “top 16”: what they ride, where they go, who they kniow, what they wear, how perferct it is where they travel and surf??? I stopped taking my lead from surfing`s prissy little elite primadonnas a long time ago. there are plenty of us out here in normalville who have been thinking for ourselves for a long time thanks for youir observation. youre a true genuius.

dude i haven`t written in here before but… fuck the Dude shit

This is a problem with any mag. that is supported though its adds. Can’t do or say anything to piss off your bread and butter, or you will see thier add being pulled. This is why I stopped reading the Dive rags never saw a bad review of a resort or a bad equp.review.

Alright you guys, heres my apology for using the word "dude". Im getting help with editing this post, too. Its true that I havent ever written before in Swaylocks. Im addicted to reading and studying all the great knowledge and photos shared here! Id still like to hear some opinions about the subject of my original post: does anyone believe that two identical (shape and materials) boards (except one thicker, one thinner) will float the same? But Im not into giving any apologies for my opinions about "top 16" type surfers and their advertised lifestyles. Finding Swaylocks has only deepened my wonderful suspicion that theres more to surfing than just being a shitforbrains (sorry, I had to say that!) consumer, lost somewhere between the ages of 12 to 25. Swaylocks is so good, it`s almost subversive! Sorry again to everyone I offended.

If the shorty magazines ran only pics of people riding different shaped finsm, surfboards with round noses ect and marketed it as the new “big thing” within a year the rest of the population would be on them aswell. The magazines have the power to make or break surfing equipment.

I don’t think magazines have as much influence as some would like to believe. Look at the types of magazines that are available. There are at least four major US shortboard magazines, maybe one to two bodyboard magazines and one magazine dedicated solely to longboarding. Now compare these numbers to the actual surfing population. At most US beaches, the majority of surfers are riding longboards. I would guess that bodyboards are the second most popular surf vehicle with shortboards coming in third. If magazines were the primary influencing factor in surfing, most of us would be shortboarding. Don’t be confused into thinking that magazines are reporting surfing’s reality. The purpose of the magazine is to make money. In addition to overwhelming majority of advertisements, the “News”, “Design Forum” and other sections of the magazine are all designed to sell.

“At most US beaches, the majority of surfers are riding longboards” Really? Where are you surfing? There are a few longboard dominated spots around but most places I see are full of kids thrashing & hopping on thin little chips.

Wow, aren’t the vibes gettin strong again, I too had my serious doubts that a thin board COULD float well, but every part of the board that is ABOVE water,is being supported by the part below water. This is not to say that a 3" thick board doesn’t float better than a 2-1/4" board and yes, ask anyone who has been in my shaping room and seen me at work, true Genius

BULLSHIT ! MORE BODYBOARDS ARE SOLD AND USED NATION/WORLDWIDE THAN ANYOTHER SURFCRAFT BY 20 FOLD. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT FOOLIOS.NEXT IS LOGS ABOUT 7 OF 10 BOARDS MFG. boy, you must be fun to hang out with- alooooooooooooha!

Someone forgot their med’s.

I believe the way volume is spread throughout the board (foil, nose and tail width)is as important as overall volume as far as flotation is concerned. Pierre

I`ve read that if all types of surfboards manufactured in the world each year were added up, bodyboard production would still out-number them all by MILLIONS. If surfing were to have a “face”, it would belong to a bodyboarder.

It’s an interesting time in “surf culture” right now…beginners may easily bypass the bodyboard and go straight for longboards and surf lessons. One learns on long/longerboards. Certainly many of them will try shortboards, but how many will stay with that and compete in the major arenas? 2 out of 10, or less? The rest will stay on longboards. However, the somewhat dry current longboard media content and, conversely the historical material which fills out many of the longboard magazines are not generally seen as interesting to younger people - much the same as regular literature and history in schools is seen as vastly less important/interesting/valuable/profitable than sciences. So the majority of younger newcomers to surfing will probably stay on longboards, but they will be reading shorty mags for the “lifestyle” shopping tips. I see a lot of cosmic floundering around coming…

If you are right, it will just be a matter of time before virtually EVERY legitimate spot is an absolute logjam (not that they aren’t already) and not long after that, the mainstream manufacturers will be hyping the next craze to hit the surfing world… SHORTBOARDS!!! Everyone will rave (once again)about being able to fit their insane new short board INSIDE their econo box. These new boards will be hyped as true “mind machines” and only a few surfers will figure out that they really are only legends in their own minds while riding these boards. A few cutting edge experimenters will inch by inch get the sizes down below 6 feet and discover (once again) that too short is well… too short. A rebound to longer, wider, thicker mid-size hybrids and eventually yes, longboards will occur and the cycle will repeat itself. It really is like the fashion industry where we have seen mid-length skirts inch up to minis to micro-minis and back down again. Heck, if they weren’t offering something new every season, how would they sell anything?

Gota Luv those micro mini’s, its a good time of the cycle to be in. KR
