dogoftheeast,
The factory in the picture, as has been discussed, was at 1109 9th Ave, in Neptune, not Belmar, and it had nothing to do with Rible or you.

Ouch. OK probably my bad, but they sure look similar from the outside, however the "takeover" did occur. I was there. No hard feelings toward anyone on my part. Sorry Randy
I might have asked this before, and apologies if I did, but does anyone know what became of Ron Sandman? He worked for Challenger East (short timer) at the 9th ave factory. I am thinking this was the summer of 68. He stayed with my family from time to time at our house on North Blvd in South Belmar, I think because the rest of the time he slept at the factory. He had a huge platinum blond Afro and was one of the nicest guys I have ever known.
Hartson,
Yes, you did ask about this before.
Ron Sandman was of the Butt Man Clan (Barry from Santa Monica).
I remember him as a summer intern sort that came out with Butt Man.
Don’t know his fate.
Randy W
dogoftheeast,
No ouch intended. Sorry.
We have all unlearned something in this thread.
Like Frank said, it was 40 years ago.
Please inform us of the Belmar Blvd. address (in contrast to the first Challenger Eastern factory address of 1109 9th Ave, Neptune) and I will inform as much as I can.
I was there when this happened too, and I was there in California from whence we came.
Love the NJ folks.

Hi Randy I'm not sure of the address. The location is now a strip mall called Colfax Plaza, on Belmar Blvd in Wall Twp, across the street from a municipal building of some sort which came to be known as the "airplane park" because of the jet that they parked there for several years for kids to play on. Yes the memory does do tricks, to me at least, but the good ones remain don't they? I do remember that the guy who busted through the wall was named Alexander. I think it was his last name and can't remember his first. We both had a good laugh, like Jack Nicholson in The Shining. " Here's Tinker". Gary
Hey Randy, What was that Buttman thing again? I think it involved Barry Gordon but I remember Yamane and Tinker always saying Buttman.
Randy, as I recall " Butman " was the term that Tinker applied to lots of people who perhaps were not being cool. I suppose everyone was a “Butman” at least once . Frank
dogoftheeast,
“I do remember that the guy who busted through the wall was named Alexander”
Oh no … oh m’ ga … that was the ghost of Alexander the G (in native spook it means “he who wears pheasant feathers in his straw hat”) … it is said of him “he destroyed many surfboard factories”, finally ending up in The Land of Bummer, there to set up EatanamCastle, just south of The Land of Elbir.
I can’t say much more about him, or he will have to kill me.
Luv ya bro.
Randy W
PLC,
“Hey Randy, What was that Buttman thing again”
Yeah, Butt Mann was Barry Gordon.
Butt Mann was of The Hormonal Age (an age that followed The Reptillian Age, but not by much) during the great East Coast Awakening.
He focused on certain portions of the female anatomy, and focused there to such a degree, that he earned an honorable name and an honorable mention by The Great White Knight of Chalger Castle.
You like Butt too PLC?
Randy W
Frank,

Your parents named you better than Tinker ever could have. You are frank.
Perhaps that is why he never christened you?
I am tripping out on Chaco Canyon at the moment. It is a trip dude!
love, Randy W
Randy, I envy you ! I should be down there in the SW Snowbirding but my wife likes to spend any extra money instead of saving it . Hey, I;m making an RV out of , what else , fiberglass and foam !! It’s about 99% done . I’ve got this neibhor who got a job at Hot Well Dunes in SE Arizona. He’s acamp host . If you;ve got any spare time you mite go there and soak your weary bod. It’s not that far from Chaco Canyon. We where going to go there this winter but my wife wanted to go to Maui where we first met 40 years ago . What a life !! Take care , Frank
Yes, Alexander didn't say much, but he could sure swing a mean sledge from the top of a ladder. Gary
Hi Hartson,
Your post reminded me of a fellow that used to be a sander at Glass Research in Jacksonville Florida in the mid-60's. The guy's name was Nick (never knew the last) and he was a working rascal. He had, like myself, not been too long out of the Marine Corps. He had an old four door Fiat that he named "Frank" and he lived in that thing right there in the parking lot. Never saw him go anywhere that I can recall. He was there when we got to work and was there when we left. He made tons of money and i never saw him spend a dime except to eat off the "Gedunk Truck" that came through the parking lot every day and sold drinks and sandwiches to us. Yep....he ate off that truck, showered in the building and slept in his car "Frank". He had kinda kinky hair with a Afro going like you said Sandman did and was a super nice guy also. Good people, good times back then. A lot of funny stories!!! Thanks for triggering the memories.
Foamerguy,
My sister Lynda was in Jacksonville starting 65, 66ish and was there for at least the next 5 years. I will ask her about Nick and his Fiat Frank. At some point someone in Jacksonville made her a board with a big TH on the underside (her nick name was Tiny Hinie) and for the life of me I can't recall the brand. It could well have come out of the Glass Research factory, and if you said a few names it might jog my memory. I sold the board in the early 70's (with her permission) both of us regreting that now. Damn. Forgetting all the details of that board is something I never figured I would do. Guess that's what 60 years will do to ya. All the best, H
Yo Hartson, Those were the years that Glass Research was in business. We made "ALLEN" as our custom board names after Allen "Al" Fass, a west coast guy that pretty much ran the operations there. We also made a ton of pop outs also. One was Rondo or Rondell and thats all this old feeble memory can recall right now. The customs were pretty good for the era I suppose. Wayne Land and George Miller were the shapers then Miller started his own business locally when we closed the doors. I forget if they made the "Land & Miller" customs while they were there or later. Big company it was. I started as a "rail rubber" and did 60 boards one day and lesser amounts on other days then I graduated up to pouring the foam for all boards. Good times!! Good people!!
I think Elbir The Fat did some gass research … this year’s weather may be down wind from those experiments.
It was WMD (wild muthafriggin destruction) …
Don’t know.
Ask the Gass Research folks and formerGuy.
But do not, I repeat do not ask Alexander the G.
I can’t say more at the moment … they may be watching …
Happy trials until we ride the storms again …
Shhhhhhhhhh …
Randy W
I worked at Glass Research also. It was huge. Wayne Land and I left at the same time. I gave him a ride down to Melbourne where he hooked up with Feinberg at Oceanside.
Probably ought to start a new thread about Glass Research as this is about the Challenger crew. I have enjoyed following it.
Yo Cleanlines,
Yeah.....we spoke a few months ago about the Glass Research days. I think it would be a good idea to start a GR thread. There gotta be a few old varmits like me around from those days that has a computer. I know George Miller (legendary shaper) answered me back a few months ago and also Wilton Keuma's (our laminator) daughter from Hawaii. Get it started and if you do i'll try to dig up some of the old guys from here and there and goad them into contributing to it.
Foamerguy,
I spoke to my sister (Lynda Poland) last night and the TH board was an Allen. For the life of her she cannot remember who she got the board from. She was at Jacksonville University at the time and there might have been some connection there. She keeps in touch with more than a couple of her friends from those days and she is going to ask if anyone remembers.
All the best
H
