Info on my Lopez Big Wednesday Board

Hello,

When I was 19 I purchased my first board- a 7"4 Gerry Lopez board red with the white lightning bolt w/ black shadow.  Same board as featured in Big Wednesday.  The board has a script Lopez signature and a 4 digit serial number next to it.  It has a fibreglassed on leash plug and when I bought it, it had a single fibreglass fin which was epoxyed in.  Since I bought it I’ve done some repair work to it, cut the fin off so that it could be wall mounted.  I’m now trying to sell it and needing to know if it was originally shaped by Gerry or not, and what the serial number indicates to try and put a $ value on it.  I will post a pic in a bit, just need help from my hubby removing the piles of storage stuff blocking it.

Thanks!

Anna

by chance are you the daughter of a famous big wave pioneer from 50-60's? if so, i knew you when you worked/lived on central coast of california.

If so, I've known her since she was 12yo.     Surfed and dived with her dad.    He was a mans man, and a real force of nature.

Well I did surf with the jagged fibreglass death fin for years until it sliced my forehead open.  I took it as a sign it was time to remove or replace it.  It had to be cut off anyway as it is epoxied in.  If it’s worth restoring, I will put another fin in.

Are photo's available, that you could post?   Not only of the board, but also the fin damage area.

I agree its best you and the board part ways.  Irreconcilable differences.

cut the fin off so that it could be wall mounted.

????????????????#*@!!!???????????

hmmm, maybe trying to surf finless like D. Hynd or J.O'brien????

wow, you crippled the poor thing!

(consider this a bump to your post)

Will try and post pics tomorrow…

No, my dad was a pioneer in many areas but not in surfing.  Maybe if he had been, I wouldn’t have been such a wimp and cut the scary razor death fin off my board…

Here are the pics    I would’ve attached more but they’re taking 7 minutes each to upload…yawwwwn.  The signature and serial number are very small on the board. Serial number is 2962.  Hope this helps identify her and gives me a price point for sale.

I’d say that board is worth about $14.00. Thousands were made and your’s is in a -1 condition (out of 10)

Sorry.

Looks like the real thing to me. It looks like an early 70’s board, the type he rode at Ala Moana Bowl.

I’d try to get in touch with Lopez through his website. He may remember it.

Thanks   Yes, I don’t think it was as mass-produced as the first reply indicated, as I’ve been unable to find a single board online which is the same.   I’ll try and get in touch with Gerry.

What does the signature say, exactly? Awfully hard to read with that bad repair.

I would rate the board in about a 5 out of ten condition, if the fin had been left alone. Minus the fin, it’s now a “3”. Maybe fetch 100 bucks from a Lopez fan. Most serious collectors wouldn’t give it a second glance.

Howzit trueoceans, 7 minutes per upload per board pic, are you using dial up for your internet connection? I thought they had outlawed that slow old thing. Open your wallet and get high speed, either cable or DSL but you will love it and it doesn't cost that much when you consider the speed factor. My brother still had dial up when I got here and after I upgraded to high speed he has been in heaven ever since. Aloha,Kokua

No, I don’t have dial-up.  I have high-speed wireless but my Macbook has been buggy lately…and everything dealing with photos has been taking ages to open/upload, etc…

just wanted to share this Stonebreaker (spelling?) i picked up on crList Las Vegas.

Howzit trueoceans, Sounds like time to do some disk cleanup and hard drive defraging to clean things up and get the speed back. Not really a Mac guy but I'm sure you can clean things up. Aloha,Kokua
