Innermost Limits of pure fun

Hey guys, what kind of boat are they using to tour the so-cal breaks? It looks like a wierd retro submarine. They take it out of marina del rey. Thanks,

WTHAYTA

What the hell are you talking about?

The innermost Limits of Pure Fun is an old surf movie. It was made by George Greenough, and included some of the first “in the tube” footage. George made the cameras himself and possibly made the boat too. I was hoping somebody has seen the boat that was featured in the movie during the california sequence. It looks like a speedboat but is enclosed like a submarine. Super funky retro looking thing.

now that I understand.

google : ‘greenough boston whaler’

and it wasnt Marina Del Rey or a submarine looking boat, unless I’m confused.

Thanks Otis,
Yeah not sure about marina del rey. It ws probably launched somewhere near Santa Barbara.
The boat was a modified Boston Whaler that Greenough had built a fiberglass shell cover. It looked watertight and could roll over. Pretty sweet. Wonder what that would go for on ebay?

That boat is amazing!

Is there anywhere you can get a copy of that movie? I would love to see it again.

dave,

not sure if they carry this particular movie, but ‘surfvideo.com’ has a killer selection of surf flicks including alot of the older ones.

I believe the boats you talking about (one small and a larger sail boat) Geoge worked on are featured on the film crystal voyger.

Crystal Voyager does indeed include both boats Woody W referred to. I saw Crystal Voyager when it first came out and thought it was pretty boring - I just wanted to see guys surfing. instead here was boatbuilding and the inside of waves. Watching it now, Crytsal Voyager is inspirational.

George Greenough called this boat the “coupe”…it came to him in a dream…good discussion of it in the film crystal voyager
Want to see “pure fun” myself !

shelter surf shop did an out door screening of the film last july they are still selling remastered copies of the film on DVD. here is the link:
