First step, if you haven’t already done this:

Body surfing. Get out there in the ocean. Swim around in the waves, feel how they move, get smashed and rolled around by them. Learn to get held under water by a wave and how it will eventually let you back to the surface. Catch a few waves just by swimming into them. So much to learn without having to worry about getting hit in the head with a surfboard.

Second step:

Paddle out into the waves with a surfboard and fall down a lot. Soon you will be surfing.

Hint:

If there are other people surfing… try to stay out of their way

thanks for your advise mate.

seems like it’s a DIY sports w/o any professional course for beginners.

Actually there are lots of resources that you can learn from out there.

There are a number of instructional videos like “Surfing Techniques with Timmy Curran”, “Learn to Surfing with Andy Irons” and many others.

The internet can also be a tremendous resource with many websites devoted to tips for beginners.

Just google “surfing beginners” or something like it and you will find a ton of them.

www.expertvillage.com also has a whole series of video clips called “Surfing lessons for Beginners” and many others.

Of course all of these are only academic and will mean very little when you actually hit the water.

They can however give you some guidance on things to avoid that can be of practical use when you are just starting out.

Of course nothing can beat a good instructor if one is available.

Hope that helps you out.

Hi Todd:

Thanks for your valuable advise.

apparently there is a tidal bore that can be surfed in that river…check out that youtube video…it’s wild stuff.

Get a longboard,9-10’.

Hainan Island is your local surf break - surf shops, surf schools, etc.
