Interior Materials Terminology Classification

Hi folks,

Can you please help me with the following classification? Please add and expand as you see fit…

Surfcraft Interior Materials:

Foam

  • EPS
  • Polyurethane
  • ...
Wood
  • Balsa
  • Redwood
  • ...
Hollow
  • Types of ribbing here?
Thanks,

Mike

Not sure exacty what you’re looking for but in the foam category you forgot XPS aka XTR extruded polystyrene.

I’ve gone away from redwood. I haven’t heard of others using Cherrywood but it’s a much better bending wood to use with surfboards. I’ve been using Cherrywood for my perimeter stringers for the last 12 boards. It’s a nice color similar to redwood and shapes better, as light but stronger!

Hope this helps Mike.

If you’re looking for ‘‘practical’’ foam core materials, it’s a short list: EPS and PU, with XPS

added to keep it’s proponents happy (I’m not a proponent).

If you’re looking for ‘‘possible’’ core materials, the list expands considerably.

Surfcraft Core Materials:

Foam

  • EPS
  • Polyurethane
  • Extruded Polystyrene (XPS)
  • ...
Wood
  • Balsa
  • Redwood
  • Koa
  • Pauwlonia
  • Cherrywood
  • ...
Hollow
  • Types of ribbing here?
Thanks,

Mike

Cedar…most definitely…could be broken down - western red, white, Alaskan…

Spruce…

Cork?

Perhaps "hollow" doesn't belong under core material? It's more of a method than material. Perhaps only Foam/Synthetic & Wood?

Perhaps a new classification for “interior structure”?

eg.

Interior Structure

  • solid/continuous core
  • hollow
  • ribbed
Thanks all for the great response here...
