is it possible to laminating with acrylic painted canvas?

For one of my college painting classes i have the freedom to paint on whatever i choose. I’ve always wanted to hand paint a surfboard but the paint would be too thick, making for some bad delams. i had the idea that when im done with the painting(acrylic), i could take the canvas of the frame and laminate it on the board along with the glass. sort of like cloth inlays but the full length of the board. What i’m not sure about is if the painted canvas will soak up any resin or not and cause delams. Maybe if i wet out one layer of glass, then lay the canvas, then one more layer of glass?

Couldn’t you just glass the board, hot coat it and paint on the hot coat? That’s how …Lost and etc, does it I believe.

yea, i’ve done a few boards like that but they always seem to chip off fairly easy. probably because of the thickness of the paint. also, any small ding will mess up the paint. my thinking was that if it is between the glass it will be more protected. i use RR and a double 4oz bottom and triple 4oz top. most of my board have never had the glass broken. if there is any way i can pull off using a canvas i will definitely try it.

Zach, paint it on silk or some other very thin cloth, tape off the blank where you want your painting to be, then laminate the cloth directly on the foam. When resin is set enough, cut along the tape line. Laminate fiberglass cloth on top as usual. Canvas would very likely add a lot of weight.

Howzit Zach, I have done glosses on boards that have the paint on the sanded hot coat and they were rather thick. Try to keep the thickness to a minimum. the real trick is rubbing out the board after the gloss. Aloha,Kokua
