I just finished shaping and the measurements I have are: 5’10" x 20.5" x 3". I am 6’2" 160lbs and a beginner surfer. Do you guys think its too small for me?
I am also unsure as to what size fins would be best for the board. I am going to use twin Keels made out of ply and glassed on. I am thinking 6" base x 4.75" deep.
Im 6 foot and 210 pounds, intermediate surfer and just built a 6 foot 23 wide, 3 1/4 thick fish outline but not a swallow tail. I think you will be fine. Like huck said build it and surf it. BTW why not use FCS or probox set up for your fins. Heres a pi of my first board I built for myself. It was made out of a 6’8" blank. Hope the comparison helps you.
with 3" thick at 160lbs you should be fine. keep the rocker low, will help you with paddle power and you dont need a ton of rocker in shorter boards. I have a fish (5’8" x 21" x 2 5/8") that floats me too well at 140lbs, allows me to paddle into some big ones though. A little extra foam will do you much more good than too little foam, its all about wave count when you are learning.
Thanks for the input guys. I have been going back and forth on fins. I wanted to do a quad fcs setup but I really like glassed on fins especially on a fish. It would also be a little cheaper.
Im not going to be doing and major turns I just want a board thats easy to catch waves, I mostly just be riding down the line. Basically I want to surf lots and long.
I’ll have a think about taking it down to around 2 3/4", it might also allow me to flatten out the rocker a little.
You know what they say, it’s not the size of the fish, it’s the motion of the ocean.
Uhhh, swear I had more to add than that. My first fish was 5’9"x21"x2.5" and I’m 140lbs, 6’ and a terrible surfer. That board was fun as hell too. I think that 3" thick and 20.5" wide is definitely enough to keep you up and stoked. What’s the rocker and concave like?
I’m with you on glassed-on twin keels, especially since the FCS big keels are 3-tabs. But big glassed-on keels are a great thing.
I just am finishing one using the same template you are. I left mine thick as I am 190lbs. I used TrueAmes keels on mine glassed on. Heres a few photos, hope to try it out in a week or so.
I remember watching a 70’s documentary where the White sharks kept attacking a yellow boogie board as opposed to the other colors. I have to laugh everytime I see a yellow board here in the NW. No thank you.
Geeze, had not heard about that, fortunately here in WA not a real big problem but thats still not good, there are sharks here. maybe I need to put some other low bite opaque color gloss coat!
I did the bottom lam. I decided to keep it at 3" thick, as durbs said Id rather have too much foam than too little. But you have all put my mind at ease in regards to if it will float me.
Nice cthulu, I hope mine turns out as good as that. I was thinking of doing a yellow tint but after watching that video I have gone with red (better safe than sorry). Not sure what colour to do the fins.
