is not possible...

…I m always hear that “i build n thousands boards…”

…is not possible, you dont have the time to do that with only your hands…

…Im a board builder from start to finish in every board that i made, from the logos to the gloss…all with my hands

…yes, I built a lot but not thousands, thousands and thousands…

…I need time for my family, for sleep, for surfing, for other stuff, for every day life…(also i dont have that huge market…)

…yes, you can hire a couple of guys for glass, other for sanding, another one for the art and airbrush, also some shapers…and you CAN SAY that YOU build thousands and thousands boards,…

…yes, you can shape n thousands, or glass n thousands, etc

…IMHO, is not possible to build from start to finish (make:templates, logos, custom shapes, all the glass, sand, artwork, fins, sales, etc…)more than 500 boards per year, and guys, for doing that you should be real fast…

500? Doing everything alone from start to finish? When do you sleep?

300, doing everything alone, already seems a lot. That’s 25 a month, 5 a week, no holidays, not much time for the family. Unless using machine-shaped blanks, maybe. But then you’re not doing everything from start to finish…

Good thread. I’d like to know how many boards all of you make, roughly?

…yes Balsa, im not that fast…but if your real fast you can do near that…

…yes i put 500 like a kind of limit…

Howzit reverb, Probably thousands over the years not just in 1 year. I think that the most I ever did in a year by myself not including shape is around 200, that’s 4 a week and as far as I’m concerned that’s enough or the burn out syndrome kicks in. I know that one of the Johnson brothers on Oahu told me at one time he was shaping around 1700 blanks a year and was going to cut back to about 1300 a year. I watched him do 6 in about 3 hours one afternoon.Aloha,Kokua

one every sufficient bank balance [and place to shape] = for me , 16 boards in 20 years .

Or, you COULD say 16 boards during my 44 years , depending how you want to look at it .

150 fins in about 5 years , by comparison … [and they still suck ].

I’m having fun trying , MOST of the time , though…

“Share your stock!”

Confronted with the I’ve done xnumber of boards

more than anybody ever in the history of spain ,

north Africa and the block where Indira Ghandi was raised!

I bailed…

I only made one board

the last one

shaping races

going to japan to shape

popping in the back room and making a hundred boards in a week?

who maintains reality like that ?

I’ll tell ya ,personal heros mythical and fleshed out on the job.

every board I make is an event

an entity,a spirit,a tool to transcend judgement and criterion.

the millionth surfboard made by Stealth donkey dong Cullpepper

was the greatest board ever and it took 'im seventeen minutes

and Charlo Van der Skiiflmunk of gottengen sweeden has won five consecutive worl pool titles

on this board’s clone

give the awareness curve a break.

the guy that catches the most waves? the guy that shapes the most boards ?

Is THat ALL there IS?

NO…

got a wife? got a dog? Got a guitar? ,thats not floating down the river ?

what the hey… gave a hundred and fifty surfing lesson in one day?

serviced 52 coeds in an hour?

is this a life loop worth living within?

I SAY NO.

you can quote me.

I refuse to surf with the gross wave feeders.

I dont ride anybody else’s boards

I sleep with my wife

I tease my kids ,the ones I fathered

,and the ones I have adopted[hanai-mentor]

to help 'em out of confusion

a balanced life is what is needed…

shaping races…let em win

board making competitively ,they allready won

bless there hearts.

…ambrose…

let the light shine

build em one at a time

or maybe two

dont look to see if someone is racing up behind…

or way out in front

do your thing and ride on.

Yep , stocked alright…

so, you can have whatever ones ya want mate …I can’t even GIVE them away !! *

do you have fcs plugs on your boards Bill ?

let me know , eh ? maybe I can send you some

cheers !

ben

[*I think the fcs hate here must have been read by too many people . ]

i think what happens with that statement , is counting the boards that come out of your factory as having built them , but in reality only doing a portion of the production …

in my current capacity im good for 3 or 4 a week , but just recently i was going through my records , checking order numbers and dates and ive only done 120 in the last 12 months , that is the least amount of boards ive worked on in 20 years …

there were times when the yearly average was 1300 to 1400 , with spikes of over 40 a week during peak times , but then all i was doing was shaping …

also times when i was working in high production enviroments 2500 to 3000 a year , but only sanding , or just polishing …

so yes there is a big difference between the amount of boards worked on and the amount of boards built start to finish by one person …

i have had peak weeks as a one man band …

i once built 17 boards in one week start to finish all by myself when i was about 22 , i could never work that hard again …

as a small business , dealing with every person you make a board for , then having a few crew who work with you to finish them …

500 a year is a comfortable number , before the stress kicks in …

even a modest amount done by a one man band say 200 a year soon adds up to 4000 after 20 years …

i can remember dave doing some solid numbers as a one man band when he first started on his own …

i was hearing reports of 10 a week from one guy …

i know another guy who would go to japan for 4 week stints …

he would make 4 boards a day start to finish 7 days a week , make 100 boards in a month …

make as much money in that month as the rest of the year at home …

reckons it would kill him tho , he said 3 a day was more realistic and that is still working flat out …

hes probably the best all rounder ive ever seen

regards

Ben, I’m basically a single-fin man for my own boards, short or long.

As for the boards I make for others, I’ve been installing a lot of Fin Solution sets lately and they seem to work OK.

Yes. Yes. No. I hope I can back your guitar playing with my (poor) harmonicaphone playing someday, though…

I refuse to surf with the gross wave feeders.

So do I…

I dont ride anybody else’s boards

Neither do I…

I sleep with my wife

Actually, I do other things with her, too, besides sleeping…

do your thing and ride on. I’m out there soon… Thanks Ambrose for the words of wisdom…

like I say ,

can’t even give 'em away .

I should have listened to my brother years ago ,

simon says ,

"ben , the wise thing to do would be making single fin finbox fins " [but of course , what would Devo do!]

… yep , Simon knew / knows !

Isn’t it a bit ironic that your brother’s name is “Simon”, talking about single fins?

an’ der son said ,

“why not THREE ??”

[I say , why not as many as you feel like]
