ben

  • as pancho sullivan was told at a young age , apparently …" never forget the reason you started surfing in the first place [because it’s fun]

In the big scheme of things… definately overrated!

But if you look around at what else is going on… It’s not that bad!

Don’t have Showtime ,work at night so I would not watch it anyway. Even if you recorded it for me I would be too busy surfing or making / fixing boards to watch it.

“Surfing sucks, don’t try it” , Saw that on a bumper sticker

Holywood is overrated. So is television. The more TV you watch the more the TV tells you to watch it.

I don’t think anything has really changed in our sport to the people who have been surfing or will be surfing for a long time. Sure it may be percieved differently by the wannabes and media types but surfing is still surfing same as it ever was. Of course I live about as far away from the “surf industry” as you possibly could.

I used to work on cargo ships and would go months without seeing tv. and after a couple weeks you just don’t even remember it anymore. So now i don’t even have one. I watch some surf videos on my computer and go down to the pub to watch hockey or UFC once in a while, that’s about it. TV is for people who can’t entertain themselves. I wouldn’t worry about what they think of surfing.

There’s football movies, baseball movies, basketball movies, hockey movies, skiiing movies, mountain climbing movies… and the list goes on. And there’s kooks in every sport. So in that sense, surfing is just another attention grabber because most people don’t do it, and so what they don’t know about it can be filled in by hollywood. All that “mistique” about surfing is just empty gaps in peoples’ understanding that popular culture can fill in with whatever will sell the film.

Surfing is not overrated. Movies about surfing are overrated. The created images of what hollywood wants us to think about surfing are overrated. Bastardizing a lifestyle/sport/art for big bucks is overrated. But that’s the way it is in the world today. We can choose to ignore it or pay attention to it as we like.

surfing sucks, don’t try it

What has happened to our sport ?

Despite the relentless BS from the usual suspects in the world, surfing is essentially too personal to even be rated by anyone other than the individual participant. Everything else is just peanut gallery speculation (part of the fun). In 2007 surfing is morphing like an intellectual combination of a snake shedding its skin and a planet exploding into a billion pieces. The Hollywood guy behind John From Cincinnati says he’s never been a surfer but was hooked on heroin for years, and so draws a parrallel between major league drug addiction and surfing to find the stoke…and that makes sense to me, eh? Seriously.

The sport/art is the sport/art…“surfing” is us on the most personal level.

yeah Herb, I know it, they have that and the Surfs Up movie . . . I saw the Surfs Up movie, it uses the North Shore movie plot and various elements. Good over all . . . thumbs the ASP / -Er mag industry mentality and excessive commercialism . . .

keep it hang over people, hey look its the ‘cool thing’ to do . . .

But in the end, surfing is what we make of it . . . our own individual approach and putting it all together as our part of a community on the whole spectrum.

Yeah probably…

but luckily it’s still pretty fun.

Is Surfing Overrated ?

Apparently God thinks so…today is supposed to be some kind of International Surfing Day (my wife heard about it on television this morning before she left for work)…and yet California, the capital of commercial surfing, is nearly flat.

Nels

I wish all those guys would just leave us alone and find something new to leach on to…like Xtreem speed text messenging.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=overrated

I started surfing when I was 14 years old. Adults told me that “It’s just a fad and no one would be doing it three years from now.” Over rated? I’d say no, just more commercial. Here it is 41 years later and Im still stoked!

Isn’t that kinda like asking if sex is over-rated???

It’s kinda in the eye of the beholder…

But I did catch that show and I have one thing to say, the family Yost needs to take a friggin’ chill-pill. They’re way too down on themselves…

Either one of two things 1) you don’t surf, or 2) You surf and are no good at it. Because to surf you need a few things to be proficient:

  1. better than average balance

  2. have great peripheral vision.

  3. Strength

  4. Endurance

  5. And in some cases more balls than brains

So this would lead me to think that you also think that Motocross is not a sport either, or possibly snow skiing. Do you only think that team sports are eligible for “Sports Status?”

Do you think that these activities rank with the powerhouse of athleticism sports of Golf and Bowling?

Now there’s two sports that could be labeled non-sports. Yes they do take practice to become proficient, but thats all they take.

Not everyones cut out to surf, no matter how hard you practice.

can’t comment on the TV show… but I went surfing just the other day, and left the water in a much better state of mind than when I entered. And I was in a good mood to start with too.

Works for me!
