Is that all there is?

All I ever see are pics of mat surfers riding shitty little waves. Is that all theyre good for? Does anyone ever ride mats in perfect waves? Any photos or movies?

view that.

problem is that mats easily become invisible

so deep ,so hands down,so tactile

not of contemporary mores

his mat venue has to be seen from

inside out to clearly apprehend.

a good mat movie is quite a challenge

a lot will be lost in transposing to film

All there is? , no .

full immersion tecnique is necessary

to really get a feeling for this ‘new language’

the period of unlearning is the hardest

hurdle to overcome…

as with movies of old…

when its good

how can you stay on the beach and film?

A photographer is a special life form.

the fact that mats aren’t ‘‘as cool’’

as being a living kelp bulb at the pipeline

phographing “”“estrellos de olas”“”

Y ““estrellas tambien””

your only hope

is to stop by some day

and lets go surf perfect surf

on the mats?

you have to leave the boards

at home or you will

take out the jets with after burners

before decending into

the well spring

Yes, there ain’t no money in mat surfing! Time waits for no man, although I’m not sure if it waits for women. Maybe just the ones jabbering on cell phones. When the surf is good and there is room for a mat or two (in the freak event there are two mat riders in any proximity), you can bet the window of opportunity won’t stay open long. It’s usually “ride 'em Freakboy!” rather than rolling out the cameras.

To which I have to add, try seeing a mat in a shitty wave from the inside out. A wave that’s going to leave you frustrated on a board of any sort is going to turn into a totally entertaining and visceral ride- you get blasts of speed, tiny sections are workable and the mush is powered over or through. It’s crazy how much fun it is. Once you get the deal of controling the rail pressure by squeezing, it’s even better. So the photogs tend to shoot mats in waves that few else would ride because a mat is more visible there, but if it’s good the more marketable surfers are first pick, and as 'Brose points out, any truly dedicated photog/mat rider is probably busy being a dedicated mat rider when it’s on. But why look at pictures? Go ride the thing in good conditions and see what’s up.

It was the link to the Swaylocks page on which the second link could be found - or so I thought. Explore the archives for more references to mats.

Actually, I just copied then pasted it into the address window and whaddaya know…it works fine.

Browsing skills courtesy of the Video Professor :?> The first link goes to a Swaylock’s post by Dr Strange with a link to a YouTube mat surfing video smack in the middle of it. You do need the appropriate Flash player to watch the movie.

the older I get , the more I ask myself that question , too !!

august , get yourself a copy of “crystal voyager” ,

"children of the sun " ,

"the innermost limits of pure fun "

…and , lastly but not leastly …

‘fantasea’

ain’t no "shitty " waves on any of those movies ! [ just Greenough , the legend , at work and play …filmed from inside the tube [by him] , and from the beach , too !! ]

…enjoy !

Don’t forget Rasta!

loves to go the mat

Your attached pic shows Rasta riding his mat like a sponge! Whats up with that? He hasnt learned basic mat surfing 101.

Kookish

Ref to Chip’s post of vids above–those are indeed mats in good waves but they are “old school” clunky canvas/rubber mats that aren’t even in the same ball park of the “new school” Neumatics!

I have noticed on several occasions, in fairly mediocer surf that I am the only one in the line-up smiling. Though occasionally some else will smile when they comment on how much fun it looks like I am having. Many thanks Dale!!!

watched a DVD recently of Rasta matting in headhigh+ Indo…

I guess thats supposed to be funny? How did you know about my “Video Professor” collection?

its so much easier to get a photo

when not buried

deep in the bowels of

a gaping aquaeous

coastal digestive tract

published photos tend to play up to the

revealation of the character in the frame

rather than the event.

visages are so much easier to worship

and I dentify.

shortly after this photo the identity of the

rider was obscured by roiling churning

pitching rolling booiling sensual

strainlines and visual silence

allowing the rider to slip into molecular

annomimity within the universal void.
