I weigh 240 - 250 lbs and am pretty tough on my boards’ decks. I’m looking at an epoxy board that has a 2.2 lbs EPS core, top has 2 layers of 6 oz glass (the under layer is S-glass) and the bottom has 1 layer of 6 oz glass. My gut is telling me that’s too light a layup for me. What do you think?
Seriously though, do you think the layup is too light? It’s on a 9’ x 25" x 4" longboard. I usually go with a heavier layup because otherwise my boards get pressure dings pretty quick. The shaper swears this is beefy enough, but I’m not so sure.
I’m 185 and have surfed boards with 1 layer of 6oz warplite top and bottom over 2# eps core on a 5’5"x23"x3" shortboard stringerless. The deck got some dents and footwells but the board is solid.I’ve since done another 6’x21"x2 3/4" stringerless 2# eps with single 4oz warp top and bottom with a 3/4 length 4oz warp deck patch and the board is holding up good, just the standard pressure dents and footwells.I noticed that the brand of epoxy used makes a huge difference because some are much harder than others.
I’m going for the board. The builder (PJ of Kane Garden) says he’ll build me a new one if I’m not happy with this one so I guess I have nothing to loose. I usually go extra-extra heavy in the layups but that was back in the polyester days. I’ve not owned a custom epoxy board before, all my epoxy boards have been pop-outs.
In my humble opinion the board will be fine I have several eps core epoxy glassed boards , I weigh about 220 I get dents but I also got dents on poly boards and Surftech boards . I believe eps epoxy glassed boards feel someware in between poly boards and Surftech type boards to surf , and have durability that falls in between poly and Surftech type boards . Have fun.
Hey nj_surfer, you couldn’t have posted this a bit earlier, could you? ;) (just teasing) I already pulled the trigger on the board, so it’s a done deal. I spoke with PJ and he promisses that if I’m not happy with the board he’ll sell it and build me another one. I’ve read that he’s a pretty straight shooter, so I’m taking him at his word. The board is a 9’ fish/longboard and I’m a big guy (240 lbs 6’5"). I love the shape of the board (shovel nose, swallow tail, single wing, quad fin) and the dimensions are almost exactly what I was looking for. Kane Garden and PJ Johnson have a pretty good rep for fishes and that type of board. The colors weren’t what I would order, but I can live with that. I was concerned about the layup, though, but hopefully that 2nd layer of S-glass and the epoxy he uses will be beefier than most. I haven’t bought a one-off/custom in over 15 years so my fingers are crossed this will be a winner.
You mean to the board I just ordered? I don’t want to mess with it as he’s already said he’d take it back and build me a new one if I’m not happy. Of course the only way I know of to find out if the layup is too whimpy is to use it.
Agreed. Just saying, if I had a new board I was worried about the deck, I'd just add a deck patch before surfing. Pretty simple fix for peace of mind, and a lot less work than him building a new board, although kudos to him for offering.
Thats me. Lotsa pros like foot wells in the deck, for that "fits like a glove" feeling!
@huckleberry - That’ll be plan “b” if PJ fails me. No idea what he used for resin or what the top coat is nor how easy it would be to prep it for another layer. I do have a vacuum pump I can use if the need should arrise.
